AUBURNDALE, Fla. - - The Wilmington University baseball team ended its trip to Florida by being swept in a doubleheader by Grand Valley State, falling 2-0 in the opener before losing 4-2 in eight innings in the nightcap on Saturday night.

While in Florida, the Wildcats went 2-6, bringing their overall record to 5-7.

GAME 1:

Rich Albrecht found himself on the losing end of a good outing, throwing all six innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out five batters while walking three in the tough loss.

Grand Valley State (8-4) only had two hits in the game and scored both their runs in the bottom of the second, using only one hit. The Wildcats collected five hits and walked twice, but left five runners on base.

An error started the bottom of the second and then there were runners on second and third with no outs after a walk and a wild pitch. The Lakers scored one run on an RBI single and then another came home on an RBI ground out. Albrecht then struck out the final two batters of the inning.

Matt Warrington singled through the left side to put runners on second and third and only one out in the third. But the Wildcats stuck out twice to end the threat. JJ Killen singled to start the fourth and then Eddie Parry walked to make it first and second with no outs. But the Wildcats failed to score again as Parry was gunned down at third trying to tag and the run home did not count.

The Wildcats left two more on in the fifth and then had a runner on in the seventh, but a double play ended the contest.

Five Wildcats recorded one hit each.

GAME 2:

A two-run, two-out single with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning allowed Grand Valley State to sweep the doubleheader, 4-2, in the nightcap.

The Lakers scored an unearned run off Kyle Maxwell in the top of the first but the Wildcats would scratch a run across in the bottom of the third. With Nic Hertzfeld on first, Erik Grady doubled to left, chasing Hertzfeld all the way around to tie the game, 1-1.

The Lakers loaded the bases on Matt Boyko in the fourth, but he found back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning unscathed. Boyko wasn't so lucky in the fifth though, as a lead-off double came around to score on an RBI single.

But in the bottom of the fifth and with Tyler Pirrung standing on second, Nic Hertzfeld singled into left center, tying the game once more, 2-2.

Each team left single runner son base in the sixth and seventh innings, sending the game into extras. The Lakers loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, and then scored two on an RBI double to left.

Nic Hertzfeld was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom half and JJ Killen put the tying run on base with a single. But the Lakers escaped yet again, inducing another ground ball double play to end the game.

Tyler Pirrung went 2-for-2 with a run scored while six other Wildcats had hits. Hertzfeld and Grady had RBI with Grady hitting the only extra base hit of the game for the Wildcats.

UP NEXT:
