Slippery Rock Wins the Rubber Match, 17-4, to Take Series from Wilmington Baseball

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - - Slippery Rock scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to distance itself from the Wilmington University baseball team as the Wildcats lost, 17-4, on Saturday to close out the three-game series in western Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock (9-4) won the series, 2-1, by using a seven-run fourth inning and a four-run fifth inning to turn a 4-2 game into a 15-2 game midway through the game.

A hit-by pitch and a walk in the bottom of the second came around to score for the Rock, as they took a 3-0 lead after two complete. But the Wildcats fought back in the top of the third, as Tristan Schoendienst singled back up the middle to start the frame. Now with one out, CJ Deery doubled in Schoendienst with a ground-rule double and then Mikey Rodriguez singled in Deery and the Wildcats were back in the game, 3-2.

A pair of doubles in the third inning gave the Rock another run before they broke it open in the fourth and fifth innings. Slippery Rock brought 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on five hits while using a hit-by-pitch, two walks, and an error to take an 11-2 lead.

After the Wildcat offense went 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth the Slippery Rock bats went back to work. The Rock scored four more runs on four hits, hitting a grand slam to take a 15-2 lead.

Erik Grady hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth and Dom Grady hit an RBI single to third in the top of the ninth, but it was too little too late for the Wildcats as the Rock won, 17-4.

Tristan Schoendienst went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Dom Grady went 2-for-2 with an RBI off the bench. CJ Deery and Trevor Adamo each had a double for the Wildcats. Rich Albrecht falls to 0-4 on the year after allowing five runs on five hits in three innings. Steve Mann pitched a scored sixth innings with two strikeouts while Tyler Brown tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

The Wildcats get into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference portion of their schedule this week, starting with a three-game set against Chestnut Hill. They will play a single, nine-inning game at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
