NEW CASTLE, Del. - - Kyle Maxwell tossed a complete game shutout in the opener, 9-0, but the Wilmington University baseball team couldn't complete the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep of Felician, dropping the nightcap, 5-4, in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Sunday was also Senior Day for seven Wildcats, including Kyle Maxwell who picked up his fourth win of the season in the 9-0 victory. Felician then scored two in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game in the nightcap before scoring a run in the top of the ninth to steal the split.

GAME 1:

The scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally. Jack McDonald doubled to deep center with two outs and the bases empty, and then Eddie Parry singled up the middle for the RBI.

In the bottom of the third, the Wildcats put runners on second third without any outs. But the Wildcats could only get one run in the inning as Eddie Parry hit an RBI groundout for the 2-0 lead.

The Golden Falcons had a runner on with one out in the top of the fourth. Maxwell induced Felician into an impressive 5-4-3 double play as the Wildcats threw around the horn to get out of the inning unscathed.

The Wildcats had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. Erik Grady and Tyler Pirrung delivered RBI singles and then Jack McDonald took advantage of a deep outfield and hit one to shallow center to plate two more and grab a 6-0 lead.

The Wildcats tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, again with two outs. Erik Grady took a full count pitch into center field, scoring both JJ Killen and Nic Hertzfeld. Next, Pirrung singled through the middle, allowing Grady to score for the 9-0 lead.

Tyler Pirrung led the Wildcats by going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Erik Grady led the Wildcats with three RBIs. Jack McDonald and Eddie Parry both had two RBIs each.

GAME 2:

Looking for the sweep, the Wildcats led 4-2 after five innings, but Felician capitalized on a two-out error in the sixth to tie the game. They then hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to grab the lead and hang on for the split.

An error allowed Felician to score in the top of the first but the Wildcats answerd in the bottom of the second. Zach Czarnecki extended his hit streak to five games with an RBI single through the left side. Erik Grady stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch to earn an RBI to put the Wildcats up 2-1.

Rich Albrecht found himself in a few jams early and nearly escaped another in the third. He induced a ground ball double play but then Felician hit a two-out single RBI single to tie the game, 2-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcats scored twice with two outs yet again. Eddie Parry hit a swinging bunt to third that was fielded, but the throw hopped over the first baseman, allowing Tyler Pirrung to score from second for the 3-2 lead. Nick Nocella then took a 3-0 pitch to left center, chasing Parry around from first to make it 4-2.

A leadoff walk came around to score in the top of the sixth and it look as though Nate McLain was going to get out of the inning, but a two-out error kept the inning alive. Felician then tied the game with a two-out single down the left field line, making it 4-4.

The Wildcats had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh, getting two runners on with one out. But Felician picked up a shallow fly ball to right and then Tyler Pirrung tried to score on a bobbled ball at short, but he was gunned down at the plate as the game went to extras.

Felician's first two batters reached in the top of the ninth and then were sacrificed into scoring position. Haiden Walters hit a ball to Shawn Edevane in right. His thrown to the plate was in time, but popped out of the glove of Jack McDonald, allowing the run to score for the 5-4 lead.

Erik Grady started the bottom of the inning with a single and moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. But a fly ball to left and a strikeout ended the game with the tyin run on base.

Nick Nocella and JJ Killen each had two hits with a double in the loss.
