ORLANDO, Fla. - - The Wilmington University cheerleading team can fill both hands with championships now, defending its Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) College Open Small Coed National Championship on Saturday, making it 10 titles since 2012.

The Wildcats won eight Open Small Coed (formerly Division II Small Coed) in a row from 2012-19 and have now won back-to-back titles after coming from behind on Saturday night. It is the fifth National Championship under current head coach Ashley Mundy.

The semifinals began on Saturday morning and the Wildcats produced a score of 85.5 with their routine but had a point deduction to sit in third place overall with an 84.5. Iowa Western Community College led after semifinals with an 85.9. The Wildcats reset and waited for their championship routine in the late afternoon.

The Wildcats bounced back and put down a deduction free routine in the finals, coming back with a score of 88.9. They heard the announcement that Iowa Western Community College placed second and knew then they could celebrate No. 10 for the program.

The weekend started on Friday as the Wildcats competed in the Small Coed Game Day competition for only the second time. The team saw much improvement from a season ago, placing fifth overall among most Division I programs. The Wildcats were seventh after the semifinals, earning an invite to the finals with a score of 90.7 without any deductions. The team then jumped up two spots in the final standings, landing a deduction free routine with a score of 90.4. The University of Delaware won the Small Coed Game Day division for the sixth year in a row with a score of 95.8.
