Golf Opens 2023-24 Slate With 920 Total at Vulcan Invite

BELLE VERNON, Pa. - - The Wilmington University golf team shook off the cobwebs and got back to intercollegiate competition on Labor Day Weekend, competing at the California (Pa.) Vulcan Fall Invitational at the Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The Wildcats improved from an opening round 312 with back-to-back 304's in rounds two and three, finishing in eighth place overall with a 920. It was a 16-team field in the season-opening tournament.

Usual suspects Tyler Cleaves and Matt Pulgini led the Wildcats this weekend, posting identical scores of 227 (+11) to finish in a tie for 26th overall.

Cleaves shot a team best 71 in the second round on Sunday, posting a three-round total of 79-71-77 for his 227.

Pulgini shot a 77 in the first round and then responded with back-to-back 75's to shoot his 227 for the tournament.

Jan Lekes had the best round of the afternoon for the Wildcats on Monday, posting a 72 to complete his tournament. On Sunday, he shot an 80 in the opening round and then followed with a 78 on the back end of the opening day. He went 80-78-72 for a total of 230 (+14) to finish in a tie for 40th overall.

Newcomer Sacha Brown finished in a tie for 63rd overall with scores of 76-79-80 for a 235 (+19).

Pablo Quintero rounded out the Wildcats' scoring by finishing in a tie for 86th overall, shooting rounds of 80-83-82 for a 245 (+29).

Competing as individuals, Blake Ramirez finished in a tie for 72nd overall with a 237 (+21), shooting rounds of 80-78-79, while newcomer Ryan Heenan shot a 89 and 82 in the final two rounds of the tournament.

Gannon won the tournament as a team, shooting rounds of 289-295-294 to finish with an 878 total. Gannon's Ryan Ferry earned individual honors with a three-shot victory, shooting a two-under 214.

The Wildcats return to competition on Sunday, September 17 when they compete in The Griffin Invitational hosted by Saint Leo University. The three-round tournament will be held at the Country Club of Petersburg in Petersburg, Virginia.
