NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A pair of double-doubles last week for Jermaine Head has led the redshirt senior guard to be named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Co-Player and Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
It is the third time this season that Jermaine Head (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) has earned at least a share of the CACC Player of the Week award, and it's the first time in his career that he has been named the Defensive Player of the Week.
In two wins last week, Head averaged 25.5 points per game on 51.5 percent shooting, and 12 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game. He also shot 8-of-18 from beyond the three-point arc (44.4 percent) and 9-of-10 from the foul line.
On Tuesday night, Head scored 26 of his game high 34 points in the second half against Chestnut Hill, shooting 11-of-21 from the floor while hitting five three-pointers and going 7-of-8 from the foul line. He finished with a double-double by dishing out 10 assists, adding six rebounds (five on the defensive glass), and three steals.
On Saturday, Head came back with 17 points at Caldwell, but also tied the program's single game record with 14 assists. He tied Bradford Morris' mark of 14 set at Bloomfield on November 30, 2004. Head's previous personal record was 12 assists twice, both coming against Concordia.
At Caldwell, Head shot 6-of-12 from the floor, hitting three more three-pointers while adding five defensive rebounds, and six steals. The six steals rank second most in a game in program history, one off of Mike Shipman's mark against Bloomsburg on November 17, 2007.
Jermaine Head is tops in the CACC, second in the East Region, and 11th in all of NCAA Division II in scoring 23.7 points per game. He is currently 83 points from tying Wilmington's all-time scoring mark set by Tyaire Ponzo-Meek, as Head now has 1,725 career points. He is also six assists from tying Herb Dennis' career mark of 415 career assists as a Wildcat.
On the women's side, graduate student LaShyra Williams earned a spot on the Honor Roll once again this week, averaging 16.5 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.5 assists a game in leading the Wildcats to a 1-1 week.
The teams have two home games this week, starting with Jefferson on Wednesday night at the WU Athletics Complex. They also host Concordia on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats and Rams begin the doubleheader at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night.
