Track and Field Makes Final Preparations before CACC’s at Penn Relays and UD Invite

NEWARK, Del. - - The distance and throwing crew of the Wilmington University track & field team competed right down the road at the University of Delaware in the Delaware Invitational Friday.

The day started with Josh Varghese in the javelin throw. Varghese finds his way back into the 40-plus meter territory with a throw of precisely 41 meters that won him the event. In the women's javelin throw, Abigail Chomo earns a second-place finish with a toss of 27.55 meters. Viviana Caamano places fourth overall with a distance of 25.59 and qualifies for the CACC Championships in the javelin throw.

In the Women's 1,500-meter race, senior Alexa Crowell ran a personal best time of 5:09.99. Crowell earned sixth place overall. Camila Cornejo earned eighth place overall with a time of 5:30.80. On the men's side, Dan Wyshinski earned second overall with a time of 4:05.81 in a field of 12 runners.

Mike Dowd took first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Dowd finished with a best time of 10:13.85.

The Wildcats went 5th, 6th, and 8th in the 5,000-meter run. Jared Cushlanis had a personal best time of 17:30.78 for fifth place. Hayward Boutte Jr. placed sixth with a time of 18:06.56, and Nicholas Licup in eighth with a time of 18:52.74.

Christian Dollard placed second in the discus throw. Dollard's best mark was 36.34 meters. For the women's team, Jada Obegi finished fourth in the discus with 27.02 meters, and Viviana Caamano placed eighth with a throw of 19.46 meters.

Josh Varghese won the hammer throw with a winning toss of 44.79 meters. Christian Dollard placed third with a toss of 32.01 meters. Freja Olofsson finished third in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 39.26 meters. Jada Obegi was right behind her in fourth with a toss of 36.02 meters, and Abigail Chomo finished in fifth with 27.84 meters.

PENN RELAYS:

Wilmington relay teams rounded out the weekend at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

Kharonay Brown, Jalah Turner, Layla Hunt, and Tiffany Banning competed in the College Women's 4x400 Eastern Division at the Penn Relays on Friday night. The 4x400 team ran the best time this season, with a finishing time of 4:21.90 for 19th overall place.

The men's 4x100 meter relay team competed in their division championship on Saturday afternoon. Matthew Hibbert, Bradley Spencer, Shemar Parker, and Taf Bunu clocked a 42.03 second time for seventh overall in the event.

The Wildcats will travel to Lakewood, New Jersey, next weekend to compete in the 2023 CACC Championships hosted by Georgian Court University.
