Eleven First Quarter Goals Carries Women’s Lacrosse to 22-3 Victory over Chestnut Hill

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team scored 11 first quarter goals in route to a 22-3 victory over Chestnut Hill in the team's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference home opener on Wednesday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats (5-4, 1-1 CACC) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win, setting a new season high in goals in the process.

Maddie Day scored a hat trick in the first quarter, with her fourth goal of the frame putting the mercy-rule into effect and giving the Wildcats an 11-1 lead. The Wildcats scored the first six goals of the quarter and then two goals in the final minute to take an 11-1 advantage. Six different Wildcats scored the first six goals of the game.

Lauren Gresham got on the board to start the second quarter and then after a Chestnut Hill (3-4, 0-2 CACC) goal, Maddie Day scored her fifth of the game followed by goals by Anastasia Giannoulis, Ella Royer, and Riley McQuaide to close out the half and give the Wildcats a 16-2 lead at the break.

Amelie Gamache had two goals in the third quarter and Michaella Cook got into the boxscore to close the period with the Wildcats leading 20-2. Ella Baynes converted a free position shot in the fourth before Amlie Gamache scored her fourth of the game to cap the scoring for the Wildcats, 22-2.

Amelie Gamache led the Wildcats with eight points, scoring four goals and four assists. Maddie Day scored seven points with a team high five goals and two assists. Ella Baynes finished with three goals and three assists while Ella Royer chipped in with two goals and two assists. Makenzie Stritzinger scored two goals to go with an assist while Anastasia Giannoulis wrapped up the multiple goal scorers with two of her own.

The Wildcats out-drawed the Griffins, 20-7, with Makenzie Stritzinger scooping up nine and Ella Royer adding seven. Katie Vindigni made two first half saves before Ashley Richmond made three stops in the second half.

The Wildcats are back on the road this weekend as they travel to Caldwell on Saturday afternoon. The opening draw is set for 2:00 p.m.
