Bentley’s Defense Stifles the Wildcats in 1-0 Setback

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - A goal on its lone shot on target in the 67th minute gave Bentley the 1-0 victory over the Wilmington University soccer team on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the opening weekend of play at Adelphi University's Motamed Field.

The Wildcats (1-1) led in all facets of the match except on the final scoreboard, leading in shots, 14-7, and corners, 3-0, over the Falcons (1-0-1). But neither team really threatened with shots on frame, as the Wildcats only found the cage twice in the match while the Falcons needed just the one to steal the victory.

The Wildcats' best chance in the first half came off the first corner of the game. Sharon Freire Omonigho had a shot that was blocked in front but then Alyssa Ruggeri tipped a cross in on goal that was stopped to keep the game scoreless.

Another corner produced the Wildcats other shot on goal in the 58th minute, as Maria Leguizamon headed the set piece from Gabbi Corchiani, but it was right into the arms of the waiting goalkeeper for the save.

The Bentley goal came in the 67th minute as a clear by the back line was sent back towards the top of the box by the Falcons. Bridget Gleason took a touch, spun, and blasted one from 20 yards out past the outstretched dive of Mio Nakajima.

The Wildcats had one last ditch effort with 10 seconds left and a free kick from in front of their own bench. Brianna Wons sent it to the back post and following a mad scramble, Evelyn Payne's shot on the doorstep was blocked and turned aside as the final horn sounded.

Wilmington now has a week to prepare for its home opener next weekend, as they face Saint Anselm at the WU Athletics Complex on Sunday, September 10. The opening whistle is set for 1:00 p.m.
