Tess Paya Wins At No. 4 Singles, But Women’s Tennis Downed by #20 Wayne State (Michigan)

STOW, Ohio - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team won a doubles match and picked up a win at number four singles, but nationally 20th ranked Wayne State (Michigan) earned the victory, 6-1, at the Latuchie Tennis Center on Saturday night.

The combination of Begona Gomar and Anushka Sathe improved to 12-4 in dual matches at number two doubles on the year, defeating Wayne State, 6-3. But Wayne State won doubles at number one, 6-2, and number three, 6-2, to earn the doubles point.

Tess Paya improved to 5-2 at number four singles and 12-2 in dual matches on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on Saturday night, but that would be all that No. 20 Wayne State would allow the Wildcats to win.

Sabrina Blasi-Smith dropped a close first set, 6-4, but then fell in the second set, 6-0. Laura Gil fell at No. 3 singles, 6-3 and 6-1, while Andrea Ribalta fell at number five, 6-0 and 6-3. Anushka Sathe lost at number two singles, 6-2 and 6-1, while Begona Gomar also fell at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-1.

The tough competition continues on Sunday for the Wildcats, as they square off against nationally No. 26 ranked Grand Valley State to end their trip in Stow, Ohio. The match is set to begin at 9:45 a.m.
