Women’s Tennis Defeats Le Moyne, 6-1, In Rematch of Regional Final

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - - Facing its fourth straight opponent who reached last year's Regional Tournament, the Wilmington University women's tennis team defeated Le Moyne, 6-1, on Saturday at the Skytop Tennis Courts.

Le Moyne was the No. 5 seed in East Regional last year, with the Wildcats defeating the Dolphins, 4-0, to advance to 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship.

The Wildcats improved to 18-1 overall in 2022-23 while the loss drops the Dolphins to 10-7 on the year, 1-2 in the spring season.

The Wildcats took the doubles point with the first two finishes of the day, but the Dolphins did win the final doubles match at No. 2. Marley Trifunovic and Alva Norberg started the day with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles before Neus Ramos Moreno and Jess Purdy gave the Wildcats the point at No. 1 doubles, 6-2.

Neus Ramos Moreno stayed hot with her 10th straight singles victory, winning at No. 1 singles, 6-1 and 6-1. Alva Norberg gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with a three-set win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 4-6, and 6-3, and then Larize Nel notched the team victory at No. 4 singles, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-1).

Marley Trifunovic kept the Wildcats rolling with a 7-6 and 6-3 win at No. 3 singles before Maelle Fontanges made it 6-0 with a win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 5-7, and 10-7 in the third set tiebreaker.

The Wildcats are on the road for the rest of the regular season, again traveling to New Haven next weekend. Their match against the Chargers is set for Friday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m.
