Women’s Tennis Opens 2023 CACC and Dual Schedule with Blanking of Goldey-Beacom

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team picked up right where it left off from last season, making its 2023 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and dual match debut on Tuesday, sweeping Goldey-Beacom, 7-0, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 CACC) have now won 17 consecutive regular season CACC contests and are 22-0 against CACC teams including postseason play since the beginning of the 2021 fall season.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats earned the doubles point with the first two results. Fenna Swaan and newcomer Gloria Barcaro won 6-1 at No. 3 doubles before Alva Norberg and Marley Trifunovic gave the Wildcats the point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Goldey-Beacom (1-2, 0-2 CACC) picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles, which turned out to be their only victory of the afternoon.

Gloria Barcaro started singles competition off with a victory at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1, before Larize Nel won at No. 4 singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Alva Norberg gave the Wildcats the team victory with the fourth point of the day, winning at No. 3 singles, 6-4 and 6-0.

Coming back to campus after missing last spring, Valentina Ivankovic picked up where she left off last fall with a 6-4 and 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. Fenna Swaan dropped the second set but bounced back in the third set tiebreak to win, 6-4, 3-6, and 10-5 at No. 5 singles before newcomer Kushi Khandoji battled back after losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-3, and 10-5 at No. 2 singles to complete the sweep.

The Wildcats are on the road for their next two CACC matches, as they head to Post this weekend for a 1:00 p.m. serve on Saturday.
