Women’s Tennis Wins 20th Consecutive Regular Season CACC Contest to Kickstart 2023 Homecoming

WILMINGTON, Del. - - Kickstarting the 2023 Wilmington University Homecoming Weekend, the women's tennis team defeated Dominican, 6-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Friday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

It is the 20th straight regular season conference win for the Wildcats (4-0, 4-0 CACC), winners of the past two CACC Regular season and Tournament Championships. They've also won four CACC Tournament contests and another contest against a CACC opponent in the spring of last year, making it 25 straight victories against CACC opposition.

The Wildcats took care of business in doubles play on Friday, winning all three matches. The combination of Kushi Khandoji and Fenna Swaan started the victories with a win at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Marley Trifunovic and Larize Nel weren't far behind, giving the Wildcats the doubles' point with a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Gloria Barcaro and Jess Purdy made it a clean sweep with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Larize Nel kept the momentum rolling for the Wildcats with a clean sweep, 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 4 singles before Gloria Barcaro made it 3-0 Wilmington with a 6-1 and 6-0 straight set victory at No. 6 singles. Alva Norberg gave the Wildcats the team win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.

Fenna Swaan won her second match of the day with a 6-2 and 6-1 win at No. 5 singles before Valentina Ivankovic continues to hold onto the WilmU record for singles winning percentage with another victory, 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 2.

Dominican was able to avoid the bagel with a win at No. 1 singles, as Jess Purdy fell, 7-6 (9-7) and 6-4, to Bipasha Mehn to end the afternoon.

The Wildcats will host Jefferson next, as the Rams come to the Delcastle Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats defeated the Rams in each of the last two CACC Tournament Championships. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
