Wildcats Wrap Up Nonconference Play with 3-0 Loss at New Haven

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - - Playing its final nonconference match of the year, the Wilmington University volleyball team drop a 3-0 decision at New Haven on Thursday night inside Charger Gymnasium.

Set scores for the match for the Chargers were 25-20, 25-19, and 25-13.

Twenty-three (23) errors hurt the Wildcats (10-10) on Thursday, as they hit .024 for the match. The Chargers (11-7) had a pair of student-athletes with double-digit kills, led by Macy Brown's 14. Peyton Mast collected 10 for the Chargers, as they hit .190 for the match.

The Wildcats fought back in the first set with a 6-1 run to tie the game, 17-17. But the Chargers answered with a 5-1 run of their own to jump out to a 22-18 lead. The Wildcats closed the gap to as close as 23-20, but the Chargers scored the final two points to win the set, 25-20.

Wilmington had another late rally in the second set, using a 7-4 spurt to close to within 20-18. The Chargers scored the next three points to take a 23-18 lead, but the Wildcats could only get one back as the Charger closed out the set, 25-19.

A kill from Sydney Barrett had the Wildcats to within 12-10 in the third set, nut then the Chargers scored 13 of the next 16 points to close out the set, using a pair if 5-0 runs to gain the big advantage.

Freshman Karalyn Osborne led the Wildcats with seven kills while adding three blocks and three digs. Sydney Barrett ended with five kills while leading all Wildcats with a .143 attack percentage.

Elly Collins led the back row with 17 digs and added three assists while Claudia Melendez had 13 digs and two assists. Katie Bushong dished out 15 helpers and added 11 digs for the double-double.

The Wildcats will be in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play the rest of the year, starting with a home match against Bridgeport on Saturday night. The first pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
