Numerous PR’s Highlight Cross Country’s Meet at Heavily Powered Lock Haven Invite

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - - Facing a deep field of nationally and regionally ranked opponents, the Wilmington University cross country teams traveled to Lock Haven to compete in the LHU Invite on Saturday morning.

The men's field consisted of 35 programs on the starting blocks while the women's 6K race saw 37 programs lined up on the starting blocks. The men's team finished in 15th with 424 points while the women finished 35th overall with 949 points.

The men's 8K race was headlined by a pair of nationally ranked teams, as No. 15 Charleston won the event with 60 points. Nationally Ranked No. 29 Walsh was right behind in second place with 66 points. Slippery Rock was third overall with 95 points, just ahead of Davis & Elkins with 96 points. Charleston's George Couttie beat the field of 264 runners by six seconds with a time of 23:40.1.

Trent Taylor led the Wildcats on Saturday by coming in 51st overall and setting a new personal record. He ran the 8K course in 25:28.0 for 49 points, beating his collegiate best from the LHU Invite last season. Dan Wyshinski finished 69th overall for 66 points, crossing the line in 25:40.3. Vaughn Lackman was the third Wildcat to cross with a time of 25:47.8, setting a new collegiate personal record as well, while finishing in 76th overall for a total of 72 points.

Joel Oquendo improved upon his collegiate best for the second week in a row, being the fourth Wildcat to score with a time of 26:38.2 while placing 125th overall for 117 points. Carter Sparwasser was the final scorer for the Wildcats on Saturday, setting another PR with a time of 26:39.4 to come in 128th overall for 120 points.

Zach Souders was the sixth Wildcat to finish, placing 183rd overall while setting a new collegiate PR again with time of 27:39.7. Joe Volk has improved his time every week this year so far, finishing in 209th place with an 8K time of 28:27.0. Braeden Peterson has also improved his time each week this season, being the final Wildcat in the Crimson race with a time of 28:55.1 for a 223rd place finish.

The women's field featured a multitude of regionally ranked opponents as well, including nationally ranked No. 16 Charleston who went on to win the race with 84 points. Walsh finished second overall with 108 points while Davis & Elkins rounded out the top three with 136 points. Edinboro's Kylie Anicic won the 6K event with a time of 20:13.7, narrowly beating out West Virginia's Sarah Tait who had a time of 20:14.4.

Tiffany Banning led the Wildcats with a 132nd place finish, setting a new 6K personal record with a time of 23:48.0. Freshman Cassidy Burr set a new 6K personal best as well with a time of 25:17.0, finishing in 217th overall. Sammy Banning was the third Wildcat to cross the line on Saturday, and the third Wildcat to set a new PR with a time of 25:29.3 to finish 228th overall.

Taylor Burchfield was the fourth Wildcat to finish on Saturday, coming in 253rd overall with a time of 26.39.0. Kylie Schultz set a new collegiate PR on Saturday with a time of 26:47.2, finishing 255th for the Wildcats. Claudia Rodriguez was another Wildcat to set a new PR on Saturday, finishing the 6K course in 29:30.7 to finish 273rd overall.

Running in the White 8K race, Hayward Boutte set a new PR with an 8K time of 28:41.0, finishing 100th overall. Jared Cushlanis also set a new PR with a time of 29:17.3 for 127th place while Niko Licup was another Wildcat to come home with a new PR, running the course in 31:54.1.

The Wildcats' season continues next weekend, as they head back to the Don Cathcart Invitational hosted by Salisbury on Saturday. The women will start the afternoon with an opening gun at 2:00 p.m. inside Winter Park Place.
