Seven Wildcats Across Four Sports Earn CACC Player of the Week Honors

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The spring sports are all on a roll for the Wilmington University athletics department, resulting in seven student-athletes earning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

The Wilmington University baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse team all had two student-athletes named on the weekly report while the men's lacrosse team had one. Men's lacrosse and the women's track and field team also had student-athletes named on the Weekly Honor Roll on Monday as well.

The 22nd ranked softball team went 4-0 last week, sweeping doubleheaders from Holy Family and Molloy. Tristyn Stewart was named the CACC Softball Player of the Week while Kylee Gunkel was named the CACC Pitcher of the Week.

Tristyn Stewart (Centreville, Md.) batted 9-for-15 (.600) with a double, seven runs scored and 7-for-7 in stolen bases. She went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in game one against Holy Family and then 2-for-4 with a double in game two. She batted 3-for-3 with two runs scored in game one against Molloy while finishing 1-for-4 with two stolen bases in games two against the Lions.

Kylee Gunkel (Highland, Md.) went 2-0 in the circle for the Wildcats last week, striking out 12 batters in 11 innings with a 1.27 ERA. She went 4.0 innings in game one against Holy Family, striking out seven batters while only allowing a run on three hits without issuing a walk. She then threw a complete game against Molloy, striking out five while allowing a run on seven hits.

Josh Weston (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored seven goals to lead the men's lacrosse team to a 2-0 week last week, defeating Chestnut Hill and Felician. He tied for the team lead with seven goals in the two games, adding five ground balls and one caused turnover. He scored one goal in the 10-8 win against Chestnut Hill and then put six shots in the back of the net at Felician, adding five ground balls and a caused turnover.

Ella Royer was named the CACC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week while Taylor Culver was named the CACC Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 week.

Ella Royer (Sherwood Park, Alberta) led the Wildcats with 12 goals in two games, adding nine draws, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. She scored six goals while adding five draws, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers in a 15-14 win against Jefferson. She then poured in six more goals with four draws at Felician.

Taylor Culver (Baltimore, Md.) led the defense with six caused turnovers and seven ground balls in the team's two victories last week. She had four caused turnovers and five ground balls against Jefferson while adding two caused turnovers and two ground balls against Felician. She also helped the defense to allowing 20 goals (10.00 GAA) and a .435 shot percentage.

The baseball team went 2-1 in winning a series against Holy Family last week. They were led by Matt Warrington's game one efforts on the mound on Friday, being named the CACC Pitcher of the Week. Freshman Brandon Grygo led the offense in the 2-1 week, being named the CACC Baseball Rookie of the Week.

Matt Warrington (Millsboro, Del.) struck out 10 Tigers in 6.0 innings of work in the series opener against Holy Family. She only allowed a run on four hits while walking two batters to earn the win.

Brandon Grygo (New Castle, Del.) batted 7-for-11 (.636) in the three-game series against Holy Family, hitting a triple while adding three RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. He batted 3-for-5 with two RBI in game one, 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored in game two, and 2-for-2 with a walk in game three. He also pitched 2.0 inning in game two, striking out three batters.

The women's track and field team broke numerous records down at the Colonial Relays, including Eliza Hildreth (Norristown, Pa.) breaking her own record int eh 200-meter, leading to being named to the Weekly Honor Roll

Men's Lacrosse's Jacob Herman (Palmyra, Pa.) led the Wildcats with 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in the two games last week, leading to a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
