Women’s Lacrosse Advances to CACC Tournament Semifinal with 18-7 Over Bridgeport

NEWARK, Del. - - For the fifth season in a row, the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team has advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals after defeating fifth seeded Bridgeport, 18-7, on Monday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

The Wildcats' 14th victory sets a new program record for a season, as the Wildcats are now 14-4 overall. The win pushes the Wildcats to the CACC Tournament Semifinal on Thursday afternoon, heading to top seed and CACC Regular Season Champion Dominican.

On Monday, the Wildcats' offense came out firing on all cylinders, scoring seven goals in the first quarter and the first 10 goals of the game overall.

Ella Royer and Amelie Gamache scored three goals in the first quarter while Makenzie Stritzinger added the seventh goal in the frame. Maddy Bassoff scored the first goal of the second quarter while Anastasia Giannoulis and Alea Javorowsky scored to start the second quarter, giving the Wildcats a 10-0 lead with 9:06 to play in the second quarter. After Bridgeport got on the board with 6:17 to play in the second quarter, Amelie Gamache and Tristan Holdsworth scored to end the second quarter and give the Wildcats a 12-1 lead.

After the much needed break from the heat at halftime, Bridgeport came out and outscored the Wildcats, 3-1, in the third quarter, cutting into the deficit, 13-4, going into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats regrouped and started the fourth quarter with five consecutive goals, expanding the lead out to 18-4 with 5:05 to play. Alea Javorowsky scored the final two goals for the Wildcats before Bridgeport settled the final score with the final three goals of the game.

Alea Javorowsky led the attack with eight points, scoring three goals and adding five assists. Ella Royer scored four goals while adding two assists and seven draws. Amelie Gamache scored five goals while Makenzie Stritzinger scored two goals while adding an assist and five draws. Taylor Culver scooped up her 100th career ground ball while Katie Vindigni made four saves and added four caused turnovers and seven ground balls.

Thursday's semifinal is set for a 3:30 p.m. opening draw at Dominican University in Orangeburg, New York.
