Five Wilmington University Baseball Members Earn Second Team ABCA All-Region Honors

NEWARK, Del. - - Five members of the Wilmington University baseball team earned Second Team American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region honors last week, as voted on by the region's head coaches.

Juniors Matt Lopes, Josh Swirchak, Sam Goines, and Jamie Treml accompany senior Josh Hampton as Second Team representatives as members of the 2014 ABCA All-East Region Team.

Hampton (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) earns his first All-Region honor of 2014 after finishing fourth in the CACC and second on the team with a .368 batting average. He also finished fourth in the CACC and second on the team with 34 RBI as a senior. Hampton again led the team with 19 doubles on the season, bringing his two-year total to 43, ranking second all-time in program history. Hampton was a First Team ABCA All-East Region selection a season ago.

Lopes (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) adds his third All-Region honor to his resume, also earning First Team Daktronics and Second Team NCBWA All-Region honors. The catcher hit .364 on the season, finishing fifth in the CACC. He also collected a .437 on-base percentage, ranking third in the CACC. Lopes colelcgted eight doubles on the year with 18 RBI and 21 runs scored. He also threw out nine would-be base stealers on the year.

Swirchak (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) picks up his first All-Region honor of his Wilmington career, earning Second Team shortstop. The junior led the CACC with a .381 batting average and 48 runs scored. Of his 64 hits on the year, 14 went for doubles, two for triples, and two left the yard for home runs. Swirchak also collected 19 walks and was hit by a pitch seven times to add to his CACC high .462 on-base percentage.

Goines (Wilmington, Del./A.I. Dupont) earns his first All-Region honor as a Wildcat, playing in his second season. He was also named Second Team All-CACC this season as an outfielder. Goines led the team and finished second in the CACC with 43 RBI, batting .302 with nine doubles, two triples, and a team high four home runs. Two of his home runs were grand slams, while he also hit a solo shot in the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The junior also led the team with 18 stolen bases, only being caught four times.

Treml (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) earns his third All-Region honor this season, also earning First Team Daktronics and Second Team NCBWA. He led the CACC with a 0.96 earned run average, going a perfect 9-0 in 11 appearances. Treml tossed 47 innings on the season, striking out 58 batters while being a part of four shutouts. In his final start of the year, Treml pitched seven shutout innings with four strikeouts against St. Thomas Aquinas in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament, earning the win. His 11.11 strikeouts per game also rank third in the CACC.

Merrimack's sophomore third baseman Frank Crinella was named the ABCA Player of the Year while Dowling's senior pitcher Tyler Badamo was named the ABCA Pitcher of the Year. Southern New Hampshire's freshman reliever Benjamin Criscuolo was named the ABCA Rookie of the Year.
