Quarterfinal Preview: Men’s Basketball Heads to North Division Regular Season Champion Dominican

For the second time in its NCAA era, the Wilmington University men's basketball program will compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, heading to North Division regular season champion Dominican on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.

The Wildcats (9-19, 8-11 CACC) secured the fourth seed in the CACC South Division with a 70-65 road victory over Goldey-Beacom on February 18, marking it the first time since the 2009-10 season the Wildcats will take part in the CACC Tournament.

The CACC Quarterfinals are held at the higher seed with the winners moving onto the CACC Tournament Semifinals being hosted by Philadelphia University on Friday, March 6.

Scouting the South No. 4 Wilmington University Wildcats:

The Wildcats won a program record eight games in the CACC this season, going 8-11 overall. The team is one win away from tying the program mark with 10 overall wins in one season, a feat the Wildcats accomplished in 2007-08, 2009-10, and 2011-12. 

After a an 0-7 start to the season, the Wildcats won three straight, earning first year head coach Dan Burke's first career coaching victory on December 6 at Post, 77-60. The team also tied a program record with four straight victories starting on January 25 against Nyack, going on to defeat Chestnut Hill, Concordia, and Philadelphia in a row.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek leads a trio of Wildcats that average double digits in points on the year, scoring 14.4 points per game. Valentino Thompson scores 12.6 points per game while Kevin Ohen posts 10.8 points per game.

Ponzo-Meek scored a season high 35 points against Georgian Court on December 17, shooting 6-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc in the team's 82-74 victory.

Thompson ranks fourth in the CACC in hitting the three-point shot, making 40.7 points per game from long range on the season. He's hit at least one three-point in each of the past 15 games, having not been blanked from deep since December 31 at Holy Family. Thompson posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists against Mercy while scoring a season high 23 against Dominican in the regular season.

Ohen has 13 games in double figures in scoring, having six straight games from December 3 to December 21 with more than 10 points. Three of those six games the senior guard has reached 20 or more points, including a season high 27 points against Merrimack on December 20.

Shai Henry leads the Wildcats in grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game while Ta'Vaune Griffin is second with 5.3 boards a contest. Ponzo-Meek averages a team high 3.5 assists a game while Thompson chips in with 3.1 assists per game. Griffin denies 1.2 shots per game, ranking ninth in the CACC.

Scouting the North No. 1 Dominican College Chargers:

The Chargers won the North Division regular season with a 14-5 CACC record, but hold just a 14-12 overall mark on the year. The Chargers head into the CACC Tournament on a three-game winning streak, having defeated Felician, Goldey-Beacom, and Nyack after losing to the University of the Sciences on February 14.

Dominican is led by their big-man Nick Smith, as he is second in the CACC in averaging 24.8 points per game, shooting at a CACC best 67.1 percent from the floor. He also grabs 6.6 rebounds per game and is third in the CACC in collecting 48 blocked shots. He is averaging 29.3 points per 40 minutes, tops in the CACC.

Robert Hueston scores 10.9 points per game to supplement Smith, but he is the only other Charger to score in double figures on the season. Point guard Joe Clinton leads the CACC with 143 assists on the season, averaging 5.5 while also holding onto the second best assist to turnover ratio, 2.4, on the season. Clinton also averages 4.2 rebounds per game while Hueston and Kristopher Hargraves grabs 4.0 rebounds per game each.

The Chargers beat the Wildcats, 75-62, in their lone meeting this season on February 7. Smith scored 26 points while shooting 11-of-28 from the floor, but 18 of it came in the first half. John Decker added 16 points off the bench while hitting 4-of-6 from three-point range while Hargraves added 10 points. The Chargers shot 52 percent from the floor for the game while holding the Wildcats to 41.9 percent shooting.

On the year, Dominican dropped CACC games at Holy Family, against Caldwell, against Bloomfield, at Philadelphia, and against University of the Sciences.
