NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Wilmington University standout softball pitcher Katie Warrington added another honor to her resume today as she was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Warrington, along with Chestnut Hill's Jesse Daywalt who earned the conference's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award, will now be eligible for the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
Transferring to Wilmington after a season at NCAA Division I's Liberty, Warrington (Townsend, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) has done nothing but outshine the opposition since she stepped foot at Wilmington University.
During her second season as a Wildcat, Warrington was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team, after becoming the first Wilmington University student-athlete to earn Capital One Academic All-American status in 2011. She carries a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Sports Management at Wilmington University.
Warrington was also a Capital One Academic All-District First Team member for the second year in a row, while also earning a spot on the CACC Spring All-Academic squad. Prior to the spring season, she was named a Wilmington Academic All-Star while also being inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.
On the diamond, Warrington has not let down one bit. This past season, she was named All-CACC First Team after picking up three consecutive CACC Pitcher of the Week awards in late March and early April. She went 13-8 in the circle while leading the CACC with 185 strikeouts, a 9.21 strikeout per seven innings ratio, while holding opponents to a .209 batting average against. Warrington was also second in the CACC with a 1.34 ERA and third in saves.
Inside the circle, Warrington's best game may have been the team's home opener as she tossed her first collegiate no-hitter against Holy Family on March 27, leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 win. She struck out 11 Tigers and allowed four walks in evening her record to 6-6 at that point in the season. She struck out a season-best 13 batters two weeks later against University of the Sciences.
Warrington becomes the first Wilmington University student-athlete to be named a CACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year since Danielle Burcham earned the award during the 2008-09 academic year while running for Keith Jones and the cross-country team.
Daywalt was a first team Capital One Academic All-District first team selection in 2012 (repeat selection) and was a member of the 2012 CACC Spring All-Academic Team for the third time in his career. The native of Phoenixville, Pa., put together a 3.77 grade point average with a double-major of Political Science and Criminal Justice. He sported the top GPA among all male athletes at Chestnut Hill in 2011-12 and was named to the college's Fall and Spring Athletic Honor Rolls.
Daywalt was an All-CACC first team baseball selection after posting a .310 average and 29 stolen bases. He has a 2012 Daktronics All-Region Second Team selection after finishing his Chestnut Hill career as the program's all-time leader in runs (119), hits (172), triples (7), sacrifices (26) and at bats (553). He ranks second among the Griffiths' career leaders in batting average (.314) and on-base percentage (.403).
