Akeel Blake Named CACC Field Athlete of the Week Following NCAA Provisional Mark

Press Release written by Mitchell Coll

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Akeel Blake earns Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Field Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office this week. Blake accomplished a feat no Wildcat has before by hitting the provisional mark for the long jump for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colorado.

Akeel Blake set a personal best and school record jump with a best mark of 7.49 meters. Before heading into this weekend, the jump has him sitting at tied-fifth in all of Division II in the event. Blake's 7.49-meter jump placed him second overall at the Towson Open out of 26 other jumpers. Blake also competed in the triple jump, placing third at the Towson Open with a best mark of 14.30 meters.

If that wasn't enough, Blake also was the third leg in Wilmington's 4x100 relay team, which broke the school record time previously set in the 2021 CACC Championships. The 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Matthew Hibbert, Bradley Spencer, Akeel Blake, and Taf Bunu ran a 41.76-second relay. Blake currently leads the CACC in both the long and high jumps and ranks third in the triple jump.

Blake and the other Wildcats are back in action tomorrow, Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7, at the Osprey Open at Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey. The field events start on Friday at 3:00 pm with the Women's Hammer and Men's Javelin. The Friday track events begin at 4:00 pm with the women's 4x800-meter relay, followed by the men. The Saturday field events start at 10:00 am with the men's shot put. The Saturday track events begin at 9:45 am with the women's 5,000-meter run followed by the men.
