Track and Field Teams Compete at Penn Relays and WCU Last Chance Invitational

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University track and field teams competed at the famed Penn Relays as well as the WCU Last Chance Invitational over the weekend, collecting a few team-best marks for the season along the way.

Five relay teams traveled up to Franklin Field to compete in the Penn Relays, holding their own against the best competition in the country.

The men competed in four races, all with Top 10 finishes. The 4x100-meter relay team of Matthew Hibbert, Sage Phillips, Juan Fountain, and Tyler Levons raced to a 4th place finish in the College (Heats) division, running to a 42.18 finish. The 4x200 relay team of Tyler Levons, Juan Fountain, Bradley Spence, and Sage Phillips placed ninth overall with a time of 1:27.75. The Wildcats had two entries into the 4x400 events, with the combination of Sage Phillips, Dallas Parker, Juan Fountain, and Tyler Levons finished 8th in the Eastern (Heats) with a 3:22.07 while the combination of Bostwick Patten, Bradley Spencer, Dallas Parker, and Tyler Levons placed 6th overall in the Eastern division with a time of 3:22.19.

The women sent two relay squads up to Franklin Field as the relay team of Deja Curry, Temi Mustapha, Trinity Brittingham and Eliza Hildreth finished fifth overall in the Eastern division with a time of 49.95. They ran an even better time in during the heats, racing to a 49.80 time. The 4x400 meter relay team also competed, setting a new season's best time for the team, as Hildreth, Curry, Brittingham and Mustapha finished 9th overall with a time of 4:20.97.

The rest of the team traveled back to West Chester to compete in the WCU Last Chance Invitational. The men picked up 39 points to finish seventh overall while the women earned 19 points to finish eighth overall.

Dan Wyshinski led the men's team by winning the 1500-meter event with a time of 4:06.89, earning 10 points. Braeden Peterson set a new team best mark for the year in the javelin, hurling the spear 39.18 meters to finish in eighth place for one team point.

Joel Oquendo set a new season best in the 1500-meter event as well, running the near mile in 4:20.13 to place eighth and pick up a point. Sam Distler set a new season's best for himself in the hammer throw, landing it at 35.16 meters for a fourth place finish and picking up five points.

Samir Barber finished second in the triple jump and fifth in the 400-meter hurdles to earn the team 14 points while Joe Volk placed third overall in the 5000-meter race with a time of 17:29.70, earning eight points.

Tiffany Banning led the women's efforts at West Chester, setting a new team best time in 1500-meter event, earning hive points for a fourth-place finish. She bested her own time by over 10 seconds to finish in 4:59.00 on Saturday.

Sammy Banning set a new season's best in the 5000-meter distance, improving her time by 29 seconds to finish in 21:12.22, winning the event and earning the team 10 points. Aniyah Bond tried her hand in the hammer throw for the first time this season, landing the apparatus at 26.49 meters to finish in ninth place overall but earning two team points. Leeah Eisenhower placed seventh overall in the javelin event, earning the team two more points with a distance of 24.90 meters.

The Wildcats now prepare themselves for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships next weekend, as the men are looking to defend their title. The CACC Championships will take place from May 4-5 at the Georgian Court Track & Field Complex in Lakewood, New Jersey.
