Philadelphia, Pa. - - In its quickest match of the season, the Wilmington University volleyball defeat took care of University of the Sciences, 3-0, on Tuesday night to remain unbeaten in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference inside the Morgan Arena.
The Wildcats (13-4, 5-0 CACC) made quick work of the Devils (6-7, 2-2 CACC), needing only 55 minutes to dispose of USciences in straight sets.
Set scores for the match were 25-16, 25-19, and 25-13.
Wilmington hit .225 for the match, collecting 31 terminations on 89 swings, committing only 11 errors for the match. The defense also held the Devils to a .000 attack percentage, as the home team ended with 28 kills and 28 errors on 101 swings. The Wildcats also out blocked the Devils, 8-5.
Junior Katie Shorter nearly out blocked the entire USciences team, collected five total blocks on her own. She finished with six block assists and added two solo blocks. She also led the team with seven kills, committing two errors on 15 swings for a .333 attack percentage.
Freshman Alex Siolos passed out 15 assists to lead the team while sophomore Kasey Couch added 10 helpers. Overall, the team collected 28 assists, to the Devils' 22, having all but three kills aided by an assist on the night.
Eight separate Wildcats picked up kills, while head coach Kim Huggins-Habbert played all 12 players available in the match. Seniors Brooke Foskey and Nicole Wiechecki collected five kills followed by Brittany Biddle and Kaitlin DiGiacinto with four each. Freshman Hannah McQueen picked up her first collegiate kill in the match, and added two more to finish with three kills in the only set she played. Siolos added two kills for the match while classmate Nicole Shuba tacked on her first collegiate kill to round out the attacks.
Ten of the 13 players picked up digs as well, led by freshman Shelby Henderson's nine and Couch's seven. DiGiacinto added three block assists while Wiechecki denied two attacks with a pair of block assists.
The 48 points were the second least allowed by the Wildcats this season, second behind the 40 points they allowed against Chestnut Hill on September 11.
Wilmington returns home for a brief stint at the WU Athletics Complex as the Wildcats square off against Philadelphia on Friday. The game has extra meaning, as the Wildcats will don pink uniforms for their annual Breast Cancer Awareness match. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
