NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Helping keep her team undefeated in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a three more wins last week, junior middle hitter Katie Shorter was named the CACC Player of the Week on Tuesday, announced by the conference office.
The Wildcats defeated Philadelphia and Chestnut Hill on the road in straight sets before coming all the way back from two sets down on Saturday against Caldwell for the perfect 3-0 week. They recently defeated Goldey-Beacom, 3-0, on Tuesday night moving the Wildcats to a 24-4 overall record and a 16-0 CACC mark.
Shorter set a new career high with 15 kills in the Caldwell comeback, committing only one error on 27 swings for a .519 attack percentage. The junior also added a solo block and eight block assists against the Cougars.
The Pasadena, Md. native added seven kills at CACC South Division second place Philadelphia and five more at Chestnut Hill on Friday night. She had a solo block in each of the two match, adding three bock assists over the Rams and five double blocks against the Griffins.
In all, Shorter collected 27 kills with only six errors, hitting .313 for the week. She also added to her CACC lead in blocks, tallying three solo blocks and 16 blocks assists in the three matches. She now averages 1.41 blocks per set to lead the conference, and also paces the CACC with a .311 hitting percentage.
Through games played on October 21, Shorter is seventh in all NCAA Division II in blocks per set and is 103rd in attack percentage. Her blocking numbers help lead the Wildcats to the ninth best blocks per set average (2.53) as a team.
University of the Sciences Caitlyn Crawford was named the CACC Rookie of the Week after leading the Devils with 28 kills and a .333 attack percentage. She had 14 kills against Chestnut Hill and added 10 digs, four blocks and four aces over the two matches.
It is the second time this season Shorter was named the CACC Player of the Week, also being named on September 17.
The Wildcats captured the CACC Regular Season Championship and will be the number one seed out of the South Division for the upcoming CACC Tournament. Wilmington has four regular season matches remaining, starting with a home match against USciences on Friday starting at 7 p.m.
