NEWARK, Del. - - Big runs allowed the Wilmington University volleyball team to take down Bloomfield, 3-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference cross division matchup at the WU Athletics Conference on Saturday afternoon.

Set scores for the match were 25-19, 25-17, and 25-18.

Defense was the key once again for the Wildcats (13-8, 8-1 CACC), as they picked up 12 team blocks and only allowed the Deacons (0-17, 0-8 CACC) to hit .079 for the match. Wilmington collected 55 digs to the Deacons 48, and hit .22 for the match in the win.

Kasey Couch and Alex Siolos evenly distributed the ball on the offensive side, getting seven different Wildcats a kill in the match. Couch led the way with 21 helpers while Siolos dished out 15 assists while adding a team high nine kills.

A big run during the middle of the first set changed the tone of the game after the Wildcats found themselves down 10-8. A solo block by Katie Shorter kick started a string of seven straight points, and 12 of the next 13 points overall to take a commanding 20-12 lead. Shorter brought the Wildcats to set point with a kill at 24-15, but the Deacons tried to rally with scoring four straight points. The Wildcats were able to take the set following a Bloomfield attack errors, 25-19.

Another long stretch of points allowed the Wildcats to take a commanding lead in the second set, this time earlier in the game. Tied at 5-5, Kaitlin DiGiacinto started a run of six straight points to take an 11-5 lead. After a service error gave the Deacons a point, the Wildcats collected another five consecutive points to open a 16-6 lead. Bloomfield cut it as close to five points, but a kill and an ace by Siolos, and then an Bloomfield attack error gave the Wildcats the second set, 25-17.

The longest run of the third set came in the beginning of the game, as the Wildcats scored four straight and five of the first six points overall to open a 5-1 lead. Back-to-back double blocks by Shorter and DiGiacinto, and Shorter and Siolos put the Wildcats ahead, 5-1. Strings of three straight points allowed the Wildcats to keep the slim advantage throughout the third frame. Leading 18-14, a service error gave the ball back to the Wildcats and a kill from Allison Briley and an ace by Taylor Rapuano pushed the home team's lead to 20-14. Another three consecutive points ended the set and the match for the Wildcats, with Shorter picking up her fourth solo block of the afternoon on the final point.

Siolos led the team with nine kills while Briley and DiGiacinto added seven kills each. Briley hit .400 for the match, taking 15 swings while only committing one error. Middle hitters Shorter and Biddle picked up six kills each, with Biddle hitting a team high .545 on 11 swings in two sets before an injury ended her afternoon. Freshman Tia Williams picked up two kills off the bench while Hannah McQueen added a kill to cap the team's 38 terminations.

Shorter collected four solo blocks and added four block assists to lead the defense while Biddle and Siolos added one solo block each in the match. As a team, the Wildcat out blocked the Deacons, 12-2. Shelby Henderson and Annie Scarfo led the back row defense with 13 digs each.

Wilmington remains in the CACC for the rest of the season, and will head to cross-town rival Goldey-Beacom for its first matchup of the 2013 season on Tuesday. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start in the Joseph West Jones Center.
