NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - With its five-set victory over Nyack on Saturday, the Wilmington University volleyball team solidified the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division Regular Season Championship which includes the South's top seed in this week's CACC Tournament.
The CACC Tournament start with the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, as the Wildcats (22-9, 17-2 CACC) earned the right to host a playoff game with a No. 1 seed. The team welcomes the North Division's fourth seed, Felician College (6-18, 6-13 CACC), to the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.
In their only meeting this season, the Wildcats defeated the Golden Falcons, 3-0, on September 28 during Wilmington's 2013 Homecoming festivities. Set scores for that match were 25-10, 25-21, and 25-9 inside the WU Athletics Complex.
Katie Shorter led the team with nine kills without committing an error on 12 attempts for a team high .750 attack percentage. Allison Briley and Alex Siolos also collected a team high nine kills in the victory. Kasey Couch led the team with 21 assists while Siolos chipped in with 10 helpers. The Wildcats out-blocked the Golden Falcons, 6-3, while outhitting the visitors, .389 to .060, for the match.
The Wildcats come into the CACC Tournament riding a six match winning streak, winning 12 of their past 13 matches overall.
Despite Felician's five-set loss at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday, the Golden Falcon's qualified for the CACC Tournament based on other conference results from Friday and Saturday. It is only the second time in the program's 10 year history that the Golden Falcons have reached the CACC Tournament, the other coming at the end of the 2007 season. The team's six wins also ties Felician's record for victories in a year.
Caldwell earned the North Division's Regular Season Title and the No. 1 seed and they will square off against Holy Family, the South's No. 4 seed. The North Division's No. 2 seed, Nyack, will host the South's third seed Georgian Court. The final quarterfinal features the South's No. 2 seed, Philadelphia, hosting the North's No. 3 seed, Dominican.
The winners of the quarterfinal matchups will head to Georgian Court in Lakewood, N.J., to play the semifinal and championship rounds on the Lions' campus on Friday and Saturday.
Since Tuesday's matchup is a part of the CACC Tournament, admission for attendance at the WU Athletics Complex will be $6 for adults and $3 for students WITH A VALID ID, and children under 12 years old.
