Wilmington Men’s Cross Country Finished 30th At First NCAA Division II National Championship

SPOKANE, Wash. - - In its first appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship, the Wilmington University men's cross country finished 30th overall with 766 points on Saturday, run at the Plantes Ferry Complex, hosted by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Undoubtedly the program's best season in its 10 years history of joining the NCAA ranks, the team was led by junior Richie Mitten who finished 134th overall, running the 10K course in 32:39.3, earning the team 115 points.

Sophomore Jesus Amezquita was the second Wildcat to cross the finish line, coming in 154th overall in a time of 32:52.4 for 134 points. Junior Matt Mossman placed 190th overall in 33:24.8 for 167 points while freshman Ken Fontal finished 195th overall in 33:31.0 for 167 points.

Rounding out the Wilmington score was graduate student Marshall Hawkins who placed 203rd overall with a time of 33:45.1 for 178 points, giving the Wildcats 766 points.

Junior Tyler Muse and graduate student Mike O'Brian also ran for the Wildcats in the National Championship, finishing 222nd and 239th overall, respectively. Muse finished in 34:22.3 while O'Brian crossed the line in 35:29.0.

Mitten was nearly three minutes off the pace of the front of the pack, as Adams State standout Tabor Stevens beat the field of 246 student-athletes by 11.6 seconds, finishing the 10K race in 29:50.1. Western State's Vegard Olstad finished second in 30:01.7 while Lock Haven's Alex Monroe rounded out the top three with a time of 30:02.7.

Stevens paced Adams State to their fourth NCAA National Championship in five years, cruising to the title with 54 points. Grand Valley St. finished second with 104 point while Augustana (S.D.) also earned a podium spot with 122 points for third place.
