NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The pitching duo of Steve Schenning and Scott Borgmann lifted the Wilmington University baseball team into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game, holding down Jefferson, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Steve Schenning went the first five innings before Scott Borgmann pitched the final four frames of shutout baseball. Borgmann was aided by a pair of double plays late in the game, striking out two while only allowing five hits for the win, improving to 7-2.

The Wildcats struck first in the top of the fourth, benefiting from a Jefferson error. Tyler Pirrung started the inning with a double and then Shawn Edevane singled through the left side to put runners on first and third with no outs. Chase Fleming tried to bunt the runners forward but popped it into the air. The Rams' first baseman caught it and tried to get Pirrung off third, but his throw got away, allowing Pirrung to score for the 1-0 lead.

The Rams answered right back with a two-run bottom of the fourth, getting an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to take the lead, 2-1. It was the only trouble Schenning would be in.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth but could only scratch across a tying run in the frame. Chase Fleming grounded into a double play as Brandon Grygo scampered home to tie things up, 2-2.

Another error put the Wildcats on top in the top of the seventh before Grygo added some insurance. Zach Rosenzweig started the inning with a leadoff single. Pinch runner Kory Pritchard scored on a throwing error by the second baseman, putting the Wildcats on top, 3-2. Garrett Quinn singled to keep the inning going and then Brandon Grygo doubled into the corner in left, giving the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.

The Rams started the seventh with a single, but Josearmando Diaz turned a double play on a bunt to erase the baserunner. The Rams again led off the eighth with a hit, but Quinn turned a 6-3 double play to again erase the runner. The Rams then hit back-to-back singles with two outs, but Borgmann induced a grounder to escape the eighth.

Borgmann then went 1-2-3 in the ninth, striking out the final batter to send the Wildcats into the CACC Tournament Championship for the first time since 2022.

Brandon Grygo batted 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two RBI. Shawn Edevane went 2-for-4 as well while four other Wildcats had one hit each.

The Wildcats await the winner of Jefferson and Felician who will play an elimination game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Wildcats need to win one game to capture their 10th CACC Tournament Championship.
