
NEWARK, Del. - - Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference leading scorer Theo Faillon tied the game for the Wilmington University men's soccer team as the Wildcats tied CACC leaders Caldwell, 1-1, on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
The first half was played to a stalemate, but the action picked up in the second final 45 minutes. Each team missed a penalty kick in the second half but Caldwell took the lead with a goal in the 52nd minute. Theo Faillon and the Wildcats tied things in the 80th minute.
The Wildcats earned their penalty kick first, as Jhamaleek Porter was pulled down in the box in the 50th minute. Theo Faillion's attempt hit the inside of the right post, but crossed the whole face of the goal and stayed out, keeping the Wildcats off the board.
Less than two minutes later, the Cougars came down and headed in a goal, taking a 1-0 lead 51:55 into the contest.
Caldwell had an opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute, earning their own penalty kick. Charlie Phillips dove to his left and stopped the attempt from Yigit Kilic and then popped up and stopped the rebound opportunity as well. A third chance by the Cougars on the open net was pushed over top of the goal as the Wildcats escaped and remained down, 1-0.
Alex Tarway and Theo Faillon had shots that was saved in the 68th and 74th minutes, respectively, but then the Wildcats finally broke through. Tsubasa Abe bent a long ball from the left side of the field towards the top of the 18-yard box. Faillon gave chase and was able to beat Cougar goalkeeper Justin Talbot to the ball outside of the box, volleying one into in the open goal in the 80th minute.
Alex Tarway had a chance to give the Wildcats the lead in the 84th minute, but his low shot trickled just wide of the left post and the game remained tied.
Wilmington narrowly led in shots, 11-10, despite the Cougars leading in corners, 7-6. Charlie Phillips finished the game with five saves while Justin Talbot made seven for the Cougars.
The Wildcats have another key CACC matchup with their next contest, facing Georgian Court on Tuesday afternoon. The game in Lakewood, New Jersey, is set for a 3:00 p.m. start on Tuesday.
