Wilmington Women’s Basketball Runs Away with 74-49 CACC Victory at Concordia

The Wilmington University women's basketball team captured its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win in a row, 74-49, at Concordia on Saturday at then Meyer Athletic Center.

The Wildcats (6-15, 4-9 CACC) used a 21-4 run midway through the first half to grab a large 28-13 lead with 2:11 left in the period before heading into the halftime break up 13 over the Clippers (2-15, 3-8 CACC).

A quick 7-0 run to start the second half gave the Wildcats a 37-17 lead, capped by a jumper from Taylor Carter with 18:17 remaining in regulation. The Wildcats were able to hold onto a 20-point advantage for the majority of the second half, gaining as large as a 27-point lead following a Carter three-pointer with 4:01 to play.

Another Carter jumper gave the Wildcats a 70-43 lead with 3:24 before Auryonah Nash gave the Wildcats their final 27-point lead at 72-45 with a layup with 2:15 showing on the scoreboard. A Tashea Plummer layup settled the final score with 16 seconds to play, 74-49.

The Clippers started the contest with the first jumper of the game, and the home team took a 9-7 lead with 12:39 to play in the first half on a Khadijah Donaldson layup. Cari Callaway tied the game for the Wildcats with a made jumper before Tenicia Spence gave the Wildcats an 11-9 lead with 10:42 to play in the first half. It would be a lead the Wildcats would not relinquish.

The first half lead grew to as many at 15 points before the teams settled on a 30-17 intermission.

Zameria Jones converted an old fashioned three-point play to start eh second half followed by jumpers from Spence and Carter to complete the 7-0 second half start.

Spence led the Wildcats with 17 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor while adding five rebounds and a steal. Jones added 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, adding 4-of-8 from the foul line. Jones also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and collected two steals.

Jocelyn Rodriguez came off the bench to grab a team high eight rebounds while scoring seven points while Jenn Carr added seven rebounds.

The Wildcats defense held the Clippers to 27 percent shooting from the field on the afternoon, including a 1-for-18 performance from beyond the three-point stripe. The Clippers held the advantage, 14-for-18, from the foul line over the Wildcats, 10-for-17.

The Wildcats shot 47.7 percent from the floor, hitting 31-of-65 from the floor, including 14-of-50 from the floor in the first half.

The Wildcats are on the road for one more contest, as they head to Philadelphia on Tuesday for a CACC South Division rivalry in Philadelphia. The women start the CACC doubleheader with a 6 p.m. tip.
