PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - An early goal put the Wilmington University women's soccer team on top before three second half marks secured a 4-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference road victory at Holy Family on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats (3-1-1, 2-0 CACC) held the lead for the final 85:34, despite getting out shot, 13-10, for the shot, including 7-3 in the first half alone. Holy Family (3-1, 1-1 CACC) also earned more corners, 5-1, throughout the match, but couldn't solve Kierstyn Williams and the Wildcats' defense.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to get on the board, as freshman Krysta Memis scored her first collegiate career goal in the fifth minute of action. Memis' shot from the right side found the upper-90 just 4:26 into the match. Jessica Unsihuay tallied the assist on the eventual game-winner.
The Tigers went on to outshoot the Wildcats, 7-3, in the first half, including the final four shots of the half, but Williams was up the task by making three saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Wildcats came out of the halftime break and again struck early, as Laura van Steveninck gave the team a 2-0 cushion just 1:07 into the second half. She took a shot from outside the penalty box for her first goal of the 2017 season.
It didn't take long for the Wildcats to strike again as Memis scored her second goal of the match just three minutes later. Preslie Quaranta's initial shot was saved, but Memis was in the right spot at the right time to put the Wildcats ahead, 3-0, 49:11 into the match.
Loran Wyrough put the nail in the coffin in the 62nd minute, putting the Wildcats ahead, 4-0, with her third goal of the season. La'Dae Boykin sent a pass over the defense down the middle, allowing Wyrough to run on in space.
The only thing in question the rest of the match was the shutout, and Williams recorded one save while relying on a goalie's best friend the rest of the way for the clean sheet. A Tiger's header hit the post and another shot stayed out by hitting the crossbar before the final whistle blew.
The Wildcats outshot the Tigers, 7-6, in the second half while Williams recorded five saves in the match for her second shutout of the season.
The Wildcats will look to extend their four-match unbeaten streak as they return home on Thursday to face Mercy. The nonconference game is set for a 4:00 p.m. opening whistle at the WU Athletics Complex.
