
WALTHAM, Mass. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team opened its 2024 season with a 2-0 loss on the road on Thursday, falling to Bentley, despite outshooting the Falcons, 6-2, in the second half.
The Falcons (1-0) scored seven minutes apart, spanning the halftime break. The Wildcats (0-1) outshot the Falcons, 6-2, in the second half, but only three of their nine shots were on frame in the game.
Bentley got on the board with just 30 seconds left prior to the halftime break, finishing off a half that saw the Falcons lead in shots, 7-3. Arianna Myers made three saves in the first half to keep the Wildcats at only a 1-0 deficit at the break.
The Wildcats had the first shot of the second half, but following the saved shot by Sophia Filipowski, the Falcons marched down the field and made it 2-0 with 52:19 elapsed in the game.
Wilmington then put the pressure on offensively, getting a shot form Sharon Freire Omonigho and then a penalty kick opportunity from Jordan Siok. Siok was unable to convert from the spot in the 54th minute, keeping the Wildcats off the board. Filipowski, Siok, and Brianna Wons all had additional shots in the second half for the Wildcats, but the Wildcats were held scoreless in the opener.
The Wildcats remain in Waltham, Massachusetts for one more game on Saturday, as they Adelphi in a neutral site game. The opening kick-off is set for 11:00 a.m.
