NEWARK, Del. - - Jordan Siok's goal in the 55th minute proved to be the difference maker as the Wilmington University women's soccer team ran its winning streak to seven straight, defeating Caldwell, 1-0, on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
The seven-game winning streak is the longest since the 2017 team won eight straight from October 7 to November 3. The 2023 team had an 11-game unbeaten streak, going 9-0-2.
The first half was evenly played, with the Cougars holding a slight edge, 6-5, in shots, despite the Wildcats earning more corners, 5-2.
The Wildcats had two more corners in the early going of the second half, and it was the team's seventh of the game that they were able to score on. Ellie Lawrence sent the corner to the far post and Alyssa Ruggeri headed it on goal, but the Caldwell goalkeeper made a save diving to her left. The rebound couldn't be corralled however, and Jordan Siok was there to knock the loose ball home for her fifth goal of the season. It is the third game in a row in which Siok has scored, with all five goals coming in the past five games overall.
Mio Nakajima was called upon to make one key save in the second half, as CACC leading goal scorer Taina Gervais finally broke loose in the 71st minute. But Nakajima dove and her outstretched right hand tipped the ball away and the Wildcats cleared it away to keep the Cougars off the board.
The Wildcats outshot the Cougars, 14-10, in the match while also earning more corners, 7-4. Arianna Myers and Mio Nakajima made one save each to secure the fourth shutout of the season for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats have one game next week as they travel to Georgian Court for another key CACC matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The opening kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. in Lakewood, New Jersey.
