
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - - Brianna Wons tied the program's single-game goals record by finding the back of the net four times in the Wilmington University women's soccer team's 6-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Lincoln (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon at Lincoln University Stadium.
With the win, the Wildcats (10-4-1, 6-2-1 CACC) secured a playoff berth into the CACC Tournament in November with two games remaining. The Wildcats are currently fourth in the CACC with 19 points with a key game at Bridgeport on Saturday.
Tuesday was the seventh time a Wildcat has scored four goals in a game in its NCAA era, dating back to 2004. Loran Wyrough, who did is four times in her career, was the last Wildcat to score four goals in a game, coming against Dominican on October 7, 2017.
The scoring started quickly for the Wildcats, as Brianna Wons stepped in and converted a penalty kick in the third minute for her first goal. Alyssa Ruggeri earned the PK after getting fouled by the keeper in the box.
Zoey Lappin stepped forward with the ball in the 19th minute, splitting the back line with a ball into the left side of the box. Wons came across and one-timed it past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game and the 2-0 lead just 18:04 into the match.
The Wildcats made it 3-0 in the 27th minute, as Jordan Siok played a ball from the left side into a crowd in the box. The ball ricocheted off the Lions, and avoiding Brianna Wons as well, and into the back of the net for Siok's eighth goal of the year.
Brianna WOns completed the first half hat trick with another goal at the 35-minute mark, tapping in a cross from Gianna Bucs for the 4-0 lead.
Wons tied the record with the first goal of the second half, heading home a corner from Ellie Lawrence in the 59th minute. Brianna Wons now has five goals and an assist for 11 points on the season.
Alexa Pacheco got in the scoring column for the season by scoring in the 88th minute, capping the scoring in the 6-0 victory. She finished off a pass in the box from Gianna Bucs for her second assist of the season.
The Wildcats led in shots, 17-1, and earned more corners, 3-1. Mio Nakajima made one save before Isabella Mazzone came on to help secure the fifth shutout of the season.
The Wildcats head to Bridgeport on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. opening kick-off.
