GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - - After a close opening set, Quincy proved to be too much for the Wilmington University volleyball team in a 3-0 setback to close out the 2023 Adelphi Volleyball Tournament on Saturday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
Set scores for the match were 23-25, 15-25, and 13-25.
Quincy received votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II National Poll.
Trailing 13-12 in the first set, the Wildcats used a 6-0 run to take an 18-13 lead, capped by a kill from Brice Hansen. But Quincy answered right back, using a 7-1 run to take a 20-19 advantage. Quincy scored three straight again to lead 23-20, but a block by Karalyn Osborne and Alex Serna, and then a Quincy error brought the Wildcats to within 23-22. Osborne and Shannen Litten got their hands on another kill to make it 24-23, but Quincy finished off the set with a kill, 25-24.
The Wildcats were hanging with Quincy in the second set, trailing 11-10. But then Quincy ran off five of the next six points in route to an 11-4 run to take a 22-14 lead. Katie Bushong and Alex Serna combined for a block, but Quincy answered with the final three points to take the set, 25-15.
The Wildcats were leading the third set, 7-6, before Quincy scored the next four points. The Wildcats were as close as 11-9 before a 9-2 run put Quincy in front, 20-11. Katie Bushong had a kill before Quincy scored four straight to earn match point, 24-12.
Wilmington hurt themselves with 21 errors while only collecting 22 kills in the match. Cailyn Smiley led the team with seven kills while adding 12 digs. Brice Hansen added six kills while Shannen Litten had four kills and three block assists. Elly Collins led the team with 13 digs while Katie Bushong had 15 assists.
The Wildcats return home to kick of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate on Tuesday night. They welcome Holy Family to the WU Athletics Complex with the first serve slated for 7:00 p.m.
