NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team jumped all over visiting Mansfield in game one and used a seventh inning game-tying walk to force extras in game two before the Wildcats picked up the nonconference sweep on Wednesday at Wilson Field.

Wilmington (20-13 overall) has now won seven of their last eight games and has won at least 20 games in all eight seasons under head coach Brian August. Mansfield (9-27 overall) was held to six hits overall on the afternoon, collecting three hits in each game.

The Wildcats jumped out to a big lead early in the first game, as they put a five spot on the board in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone of game one. With the bases loaded and one out, Bryan Miller took a two strike pitch and pulled it down the left field line, clearing the bases for a double. Brandon Payne followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side to score Miller from second and the 4-0 lead. Now on third, Payne scattered home as Adam Soley hit a sharp ground ball to first for the RBI, making it 5-0 after one inning.

Wilmington put the game away with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and could have scored more but left the bases loaded. With the bases juiced for the first time in the inning, Joe Harbach grounded into a double play, scoring Jonathan Rodriguez on the play. Brendan Fallers scurried home on a wild pitch for the innings second run and the Wildcats needed to start from scratch once again.

Mike Godwin walked, Jordan Oncay singled and Miller walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Payne then collected his third hit of the game, hitting an RBI single to make it 8-1 and keeping the bases loaded. Soley then took a pitch to the body, getting hit by a pitch for the final RBI of the inning, forcing home Oncay to make it 9-1 after four complete innings.

Harbach rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats in the fifth inning, as Fallers and BJ Janney hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Harbach followed suit with another single, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games, scoring Fallers for the 10-1 lead.

The five runs were more than enough for game one start Justin DeLong, as he tossed five strong innings allowing one run on three hits. He struck out seven batters before handing the ball over to conference started Dave Hatt and Jamie Treml. Treml recorded two more strikeouts in the seventh inning, as both he and Hatt three scoreless innings.

The second game did not come as easily for the Wildcats, as they found themselves down 2-1 after the first three innings.

Still trailing 2-1 heading into their final at-bat, Matt Lopes worked a one-out walk to put the tying run aboard. Kyle Hitchens followed with a single and an error by Mansfield's third baseman put runners on second and third with one out.

Now with two outs, Harbach worked another walk to load the bases and Mike Godwin forced in the tying run with yet another two-out walk, tying the game at 2-2.

After Oncay threw a scoreless eighth inning, the Wildcats used another two-out rally to put the tying run in scoring position. With two outs, Payne sent a ball down the right field line for a double and came around to score in the next at-bat as Joe Marciano singled through the right side with the game-winning RBI.

Ryan Lally started game two, throwing five innings while giving up two runs in the third inning, allowing three hits and striking out three batters. Tyler Fries struck out two in a perfect sixth inning while Nick Marics struck out one batter in a perfect seventh.

Payne finished 4-for-6 with two RBI's and two runs scored in the doubleheader while Janney tallied three hits and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 11 straight games.

The Wildcats return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action on Saturday, as they are set to square off against Concordia on the road. The first game of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
