PHILIPPI, W.VA. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team used 12 different goal scorers to get by Alderson Broaddus, 20-5, to wrap up its trip through the Appalachian Mountains on Thursday afternoon.
The Wildcats (4-1) were led by Ella Baynes and Maddie Day's six points each, with Day leading the Wildcats with four goals. Ella Baynes added three goals and three assists while Ella Royer added a hat trick as well with three goals and an assist.
Wilmington scored the first eight goals of the game and then used an 8-0 second quarter to separate themselves and take a 16-1 lead into the halftime break.
Alderson Broaddus scored the first three goals of the third quarter but then Ella Royer scored in the final seconds of the third quarter to swing the momentum back in favor of the Wildcats. The Wildcats would go on to close out the game with a 3-1 advantage in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats were on the right side of the draw circle on Thursday, winning 20-6. They also outshot the Battlers, 37-12, while committing less turnovers, 15-11.
Makenzie Stritzinger added two goals and tied for the team lead with five draws. Michaella Cook and Rile McQuaide totaled a goal and two assists while Amelie Gamache added a goal, an assist, five draws, and a team high four ground balls. Taylo Culver, Alea Javorowsky, Anastasia Giannoulis, Marisa Swanson, and Shelby Blanford all got into the boxscore with single goals.
Katie Vindigni made three first half saves for the win before turning it over to Ashley Richmond who made one stop in the second half.
The Wildcats five-game road trip to start the season comes to a close on Saturday, as they host Kutztown in their 2023 home opener at the WU Athletics Complex. The opening draw is set for 11:00 a.m.
