NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's soccer team stretched it unbeaten streak to four straight, all inside the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, with a decisive 6-0 victory over a shorthanded Concordia team on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.
With the win, the Wildcats (6-4-2, 6-1-1 CACC) stayed in second place in the CACC standings, two points behind Philadelphia, with 19. The loss was Concordia's (0-11, 0-8 CACC) 23rd consecutive loss dating back to last season.
Wilmington came out on all cylinders in the opening 45 minutes, putting five goals on the board to leave little doubt on the outcome. Brittany Rhodes put two on the board in the first 30 minutes while Ashley Kroll added two goals of her own in the first half. Morgan Fraczkowski was the final first half scorer for the Wildcats.
Rhodes put the Wildcats on the board in the fifth minute with her third goal of the season, connecting with Victoria Vasapolli on a nice through box to just within the six yard box for the game's opening goal. But the Clippers held strong for the next 23 minutes before the Wildcats poured it on with four goals in a five minute span.
Rhodes made it 2-0 with her second goal of the match in the 28th minute, putting one home off a corner from Chelsea Grace for her fourth goal of the season. Her shot came off the corner from Grace, taking the shot from outside the 18 yard box, beating Clipper goaltender Johana Vargas.
Less than three minutes later, Kroll got on the scoreboard with a long range shot from 30 yards out for her second goal of the season. The unassisted goal came 30:32 into the contest.
Fraczkowski continued to add on for the Wildcats, as she tallied her lone goal of the afternoon not even a minute later, making it 4-0 in the 32nd minute. Grace again played a perfect through ball, this time to Fraczkowski who put it home from outside the 18 yard box for her fifth goal of the season.
Kroll capped the scoring in the first half with her second of the match, third of the season, barely a minute following Fraczkowski's goal. Just 1:22 later, Kroll received a cross from Grace in the right corner and put it home for the 5-0 lead with 12:14 left on the scoreboard.
The Wildcats outshot the Clippers 16-1 in the first half, and earned the advantage in corners, 6-0.
After the halftime break, Jenna Quaranta sealed the deal on the victory with her fifth goal of the season in the 61st minute. Monica Weil put the ball across, finding Quaranta who beat Vargas with 29:49 left in regulation.
Concordia started the match with eight field players and the goalkeeper.
The Wildcats outshot Concordia, 24-2, for the match and earned nine corners to Concordia's one. Vargas made nine saves on the afternoon while Wildcat goalkeeper Amanda Walters recorded two stops for her third shutout of the season.
Wilmington steps out of the CACC for a pair of matches this week, as the Wildcats welcome Dowling on Tuesday and head to LIU Post on Thursday. They get back into conference play next Saturday when they head to Felician for a night game starting at 5:30 p.m.
