NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Four student-athletes from the Wilmington University athletics departments outperformed their counterparts last week, each earning a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week award as announce by the conference office on Tuesday.
Men's Soccer's Elliot Johnson was named the CACC Defensive Player of the Week while women's soccer's Kiya Wilson earned the same accolades on the women's side. Kierstyn Williams was also named the CACC Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time this season. Women's Tennis' Begona Gomar was named the CACC Player of the Week as well.
Johnson (Essex, England) helped anchor the Wildcats' defense to a pair of shutouts last week, defeating Chestnut Hill and Post by like scores of 3-0. The sophomore helped lead the defense in only allowing the Griffins eight shots (four on goal) and the Eagles seven shots (three on frame). It is the first such award in Johnson's career.
On the women's side, Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Williams (Middletown, Del.) helped lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 week as well.
Playing as the center back, Wilson anchored the defense that only allowed eight shots (three on goal) in a 2-0 shutout at Chestnut Hill. On Saturday, Post was only able to get six shots (three on goal) off in a 3-1 victory for the Wildcats. It is the first such award for the freshman in her career.
Williams was a part of her fifth shutout this season, the fourth all to herself. She made three saves in a 2-0 victory at Chestnut Hill and two more in a 3-1 victory over Post on Senior Day. She is now third in the CACC with a .785 save percentage and fourth with a 1.57 goals against average.
On the tennis courts, Gomar (Valencia, Spain) went a perfect 6-0 in leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 record last week. Playing at number one singles, she defeated the top players from the District of Columbia, Post, and Jefferson, all in straight sets. Dominika Hadnadova from UDC was ranked 15th in the East Region and Gomar set her down, 6-2 and 6-2. Playing at number two doubles, Gomar teamed up with Anushka Sathe to take down her three opponents by scores of 8-3, 8-2, and 8-1, respectively. It is the first weekly honor by the conference for the sophomore.
Men's soccer's Lorne Bickley and Vinny Tasca were named to the Weekly Honor Roll in helping the Wildcats to a 2-0 CACC record last week as well. Bickley scored two goals and added two assists while Tasca recorded both shutouts in goal.
