Evelyn Payne Scores Twice as Women’s Soccer Extends Winning Steak to Six with 3-1 Victory at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Evelyn Payne scored multiple goals for the first time in her career, leading the Wilmington University women's soccer team to its sixth straight victory, 3-1, at Holy Family on Tuesday night on Tiger Field.

The Wildcats (7-2, 4-0 CACC), who are receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll, scored twice in the first half and then added an insurance goal in the 65th minute to secure their sixth straight win.

IT didn't take long for Evelyn Payne to get the Wildcats on the board, scoring with the first chance of the contest. After a turnover at midfield, Jordan Siok made a long run down the middle of the field. She fed Payne into the box on the right side and her low shot to the far post hit the side-netting for the 1-0 lead just 1:58 into the contest.

Moments later, the Wildcats again scored off a turnover at midfield. This time it was Brianna Wons pinging a ball to the left side of the box for Jordan Siok. Siok went top shelf from the left side of the box to give the Wildcats the 2-0 lead just 10:06 into the contest.

The Wildcats outshot the Tigers, 10-4, in the first half, but only went into the break with the 2-0 lead. They also outearned the Tigers, 6-2, in corners in the first 45 minutes.

The Tigers were the team to start fast in the second half, cutting the deficit in half just 2:12 into play.

Evelyn Payne extended the lead back to two goals in the 65th minute though, scoring her second of the game. She went from her right foot to her left foot and blasted a shot from 12-yards out, beating the keeper for the 3-1 lead 64:29 into the match.

The Wildcats outshot the Tigers, 17-10, for the match while also earning more corners, 8-2. Arianna Myers made three saves in the first half before Mio Nakajima came in and made two saves in the second half to lock down the victory.

The Wildcats put their six game-winning streak on the line on Saturday when they return home to take on Caldwell at the WU Athletics Complex. The women start a CACC doubleheader with a 12:00 p.m. kick-off.
