Goal in 84th Minute Sinks Wilmington Men’s Soccer, 1-0, at Dominican

A goal in the 84th minute was all Dominican needed to defeat the Wilmington University men's soccer team, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the DC Soccer Field.

In a tightly contested match that saw the Chargers (8-3-1, 6-2-1 CACC) narrowly outshoot the Wildcats (8-6, 5-4 CACC), 9-7, Luis DelPezo's goal 83:32 into the match was the deciding factor.

The Wildcats and Chargers notched shot for shot in the second half, 5-5, but the Chargers led the match, 9-7. Each team earned an earned amount of corners, 5-5, with all five of the Wildcats coming in the second half. Two of the corner kicks came following the Dominican goal in the 84th minute.

Steven O'Connor got a shot off following a corner in the 86th minute but Dominican goalkeeper Steven Hegner came up with the save. Joe Woodley's header off a corner in the 87th minute sailed high, the final opportunity for the Wildcats.

Hegner made four saves for the Chargers to secure the shutout, making two stops in each half for the home team. Frank Hall recorded two first half saves in goal for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Bruno Montini and O'Connor led the Wildcats with two shots while Woodley, Greg Bishop, and Josh Fawssett each tallied one shot throughout the contest.

The Wildcats return to action and the WU Athletics Complex for their next contest, rounding out their nonconference schedule against Bridgeport on Tuesday afternoon. Opening tip is set for 3:30 p.m.
