Wilmington's Kelly Schirmer Named to NFCA Softball All-Northeast Region Team

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington College is pleased to announce that softball standout, Kelly Schirmer (Sussex Tech HS/Georgetown, DE) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Northeast Region second team for her performance this past season. The All-Region teams were chosen by the head coaches in the Northeast Region, which includes teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), the East Coast Conference, and the Northeast 10 Conference.

Schirmer, a sophomore catcher, finished the year hitting .389 with 18 runs scored and a team-leading 37 runs batted in.  She was tenth in the conference in batting, eighth in hits (56), sixth in RBIs, and seventh in total bases (80).  Schirmer was second on the team in hitting, doubles (11), triples (2), home runs (3), slugging percentage (.556) and on base percentage (.435).  She led the team in fielding percentage (.987), and only recorded four errors while catching every inning of the 45 games.  She was also selected to the CACC All-Tournament Team for her efforts at the conference playoffs, as she helped the 'Cats to a third place finish.

She becomes only the second Wildcat softball member in school history to have earned NFCA All-Region honors, when Wilmington made the move to NCAA Division II in 2004.

Kelly was also recently selected to the ESPN-The Magazine Academic All-District Third Team, for her efforts both on the field and in the classroom.  A Behavioral Sciences major, Schirmer currently has a 3.73 grade point average and has made the dean's list in each of her four semesters at Wilmington.

The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 16-6 record in the CACC, an overall record of 31-15, and were regionally ranked for only the second time in school and program history.     The most improved team in the conference from a year ago when they were 9-31, Wilmington finished third in the regular season and also placed third in the CACC Championship Tournament.
