Goldey-Beacom Walk-Offs Sink Baseball In CACC Tournament Best-of-Three Series

HOCKESSIN, Del. - - A pair of Goldey-Beacom walk-offs in the bottom ninth eliminated the Wilmington University baseball team from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, falling 7-6 on a walk-off homer, and 4-3 on a walk-off double, on Friday afternoon at Doyle Field.

The sweep gives the Lightning the CACC Tournament First Round Series Victory, 2-0, in the best-of-three. Goldey-Beacom advances to the double elimination portion of the CACC Tournament hosted by Post University next weekend in Waterbury, Connecticut. The Wildcats' season comes to a close with a 24-21 record:

GAME 1:
The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the first, but then only scored once more in the sixth before needing a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game. The Lightning scored one in the second, three in the fourth, and two in the fifth before walking it off with the first batter of the bottom of the ninth.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first and broke the ice with a wild pitch with two outs. Erik Grady then singled into center, scoring two more for the 3-0 lead. The Wildcats reloaded the bases and Zach Walker was hit by a pitch to bring in another run, taking a 4-0 lead.

A solo homer to start the bottom of the second put Goldey-Beacom on the board and then a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth tied the game, 4-4. Goldey-Beacom then took the lead in the fifth, hitting a one-out single with the bases loaded to plate two, 6-4.

With two outs and two on in the top of the sixth, Tyler Pirrung singled down the first base line and AJ Tropiano turned the corner at third and raced home before the Lightning could respond.

The Wildcats left runners on second in the seventh and eighth innings but then was able to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Jack McDonald singled to start the inning and then pinch runner Garrett Quinn eventually made his way to third base. Matt Warrington then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 6-6.

But just two pitches into the bottom of the ninth, Darin Miller hit an opposite field homer, walking it off for the Lightning, 7-6.

Jack McDonald went 2-for-5 in the game while Kory Pritchard went 2-for-3. Matt Warrington pitched 8.0 IP while striking out 8.

GAME 2:
The Wildcats struck first again in game two, but only scored single runs in the first, fifth, and seventh innings. Goldey-Beacom tied the game with a two-run sixth, and then tied it again with a run in the seventh for walking it off with a run int eh bottom of the ninth.

Jack McDonald put the Wildcats on the board with a one-out double in the top of the first.

Brandon Grygo led off the fifth with a double but needed a Kory Pritchard two-out infield single to score from second for the 2-0 lead.

Goldey-Beacom answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring unearned runs on a bases loaded walk and an RBI ground out.

The Wildcats answered right back, as Tyler Pirrung hit a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. Jack McDonald moved him up to third and an errant throw to third went out of play, giving the Wildcats the 3-2 lead.

But the Wildcats couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the seventh, as two out walks came back to haunt the bullpen. A two-out RBI single down the left field line tied the game, 3-3, before CJ Deery struck out a batter to end the inning with the bases loaded.

Erik Grady was left on second in the eighth and a double play ended the top of the ninth for the Wildcats.

A one-out walk moved up to second on a wild pitch for the Lightning in the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Walker then beat the drawn in outfield over the top, hitting a walk-off double to claim the game, 4-3, and the series, 2-0.

Brandon Grygo went 2-for-5 with a double while Jack McDonald went 2-for-3 with a double. Kory Pritchard batted 2-for-5 with Erik Grady finished 2-for-3 as well. Chase Fleming threw 5.1 inning to open the game, allowing two unearned runs on six hits with four punchouts.
