Katie Warrington Earns Wilmington University’s First Capital One Academic All-America First Team Honor

TOWSON, Md. - - Senior right-handed pitcher Katie Warrington (Townsend, Del.) rounded out her outstanding athletic career on the diamond earlier this month but continues to add to her academic accomplishments by becoming the first  Wilmington University student-athlete to be named Capital One Academic All-America First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

After earning Capital One Academic All-America honors the previous two years, being named third team as a sophomore and second team as a junior, Warrington is one of two pitchers on the Capital One Academic All-America first team.

Most recently, Warrington earned the Audrey K. Doberstein Award for Leadership during spring commencement on May 19. It is an award presented to one undergraduate at Wilmington University who demonstrated leadership in the classroom and community, as well as its willingness to promote the mission of Wilmington University.

A sports management major with a 3.99 grade point average, Warrington led the Wildcats to a 34-20 record.  She was named as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second time.  A three-time first team All-CACC selection, she finished the year with a 17-5 record and a conference-best 0.99 earned run average, striking out a league-high and Wilmington single-season record 230 batters in 134.1 innings.

Warrington helped lead the Wildcats to their most impressive season to date, winning a record 34 games, including a record 19 contests in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The team earned the third seed in the CACC Tournament.

Warrington was named Daktronics All-East Region First Team for the second time in her career, as she also picked up the honor as a sophomore in 2011, her first season as a Wildcat. She earns the honor after being named First Team All-CACC and the CACC Pitcher of the Year in 2013.

The senior was a part of 11 shutouts in the season, throwing 16 complete games. Hitters only batted .160 against her on the year. She struck out a season high 17 batters twice this season, first against Felician in a non-conference game in Clermont, Fla., and then against Nyack on Senior Day. Warrington threw 13 games with double digit strikeouts for the year, compiling a program record 645 strikeouts for her three-year career.

Senior catcher Amy Madden of Southern Nazarene University, a native of Bethany, Okla., has been named as the Capital One Academic All‐America of the Year for NCAA Division II.  A biology/chemistry major with a 4.00 GPA, she leads the first team after earning Academic All-America honors on the NAIA level as a sophomore and junior.

The eleven members of the Capital One Academic All-America Division II softball first team combined for a 3.82 GPA.
