WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team started the 2021-22 season with a 7-0 sweep of visiting Millersville on Tuesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The afternoon started with the Wildcats (1-0) earning the doubles' point, winning quickly at No. 3 and No. 1. They made it a clean sweep of the doubles with a close match at No. 2.
The combination of Fenna Swaan and Marley Trifunovic started the scoring with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles before Larize Nel and Neus Ramon Moreno gave the Wildcats the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 1. Jess Purdy and Valentina Ivankovic fought for a 7-5 victory at No. 2 for the sweep.
Neus Ramos Moreno kept her strong collegiate debut going in the singles portion of the match, bageling her opponent at No. 3 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Larize Nel had a similar outcome at No. 6 singles, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead with blank scores of 6-0 and 6-0.
Making her collegiate debut today, Marley Trifunovic got off to a great start at No. 5 singles, giving the Wildcats the team victory with the fourth point of the day, winning 6-0 and 6-2. Valentina Ivankovic won at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 before Jess Purdy made her Wildcat debut at No. 1 singles with a 6-1 and 6-4 victory.
Begona Gomar, the final holdover from the program's initial season in 2016-17, needed to shake off the rust early in her match, but eventually won at No. 4 singles, 7-5 and 6-2, to give the Wildcats clean sheet, 7-0.
The dual matches will be put on pause for the next week, as the team prepares for the 2021 ITA East Regional Championships this weekend. The individual and doubles tournament will begin Friday, hosted at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
