CALDWELL, N.J. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team got back on track on Saturday, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference North Division leaders Caldwell College, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Newman Center.

Set scores for the match were 22-25, 25-13, 25-10, 20-25, and 15-10.

After starting off slowly in the first set, the Wildcats (11-8, 6-1 CACC) came back and hit .423 in the second set, and .435 in the third set to start the comeback trail. Caldwell (9-8, 6-1 CACC) was able to tie the match at 2-2 with hitting .308 in the fourth set but the Wildcats battled back to claim the fifth and deciding set.

Despite hitting a .078 in the first set, the Wildcats continued to pound the opposite side of the net for the remainder of the match, finishing the day with a .259 attack percentage. They went tallied 47 kills with only 10 errors, on 107 swings in the final four sets, combining to hit .346 after the opening frame.

The second and third sets were all Wilmington, as the visitors opened up leads of 13-5, 17-7, and 20-8 in the second game before settling on a game of 25-13 to tie the match at 1-1. The Wildcats used a 6-0 run in the middle of the third set to open a 21-7 lead, before finishing out the frame with four of the final points to win going away, 25-10.

Wilmington jumped out to a large 8-1 lead in the fourth set, but the Cougars came back fighting to eventually tie the match at 2-2. After falling behind 8-1, Caldwell scored five of the next six, and eight of the next 11 points to crawl back within 11-9, forcing the Wildcats into a timeout. The home team eventually timed the set at 13-13, before moving in front for good with four straight points late, taking a 21-18 advantage. They tallied four of the next six points to take the set, 25-20.

The Wildcats again jumped out to an early lead in the fifth set, getting back to back kill by Katie Shorter to take the frame. Now, 2-1, the Wildcats scored four of the next five points, never letting the lead slip out of their hands the rest of the way.

Leading 10-8 in the final frame, Allison Briley and Shorter collected back-to-back kills before a Caldwell attack errors put Wilmington in front, 13-8. Kaitlin DiGiacinto gave the Wildcats match point with a kill, 14-9, before a bad set by the Cougars ends the game, and the match, 15-10.

Both middle hitters Shorter and Brittany Biddle led the charge for the Wildcats, as Biddle paced the offense with 15 kills. Shorter added 11 kills on a team high .429 hitting percentage. Biddle's 15 kills came on 31 swings for a .419 attack percentage as well. DiGiacinto was the only other Wildcat to record double digit kills, finishing with 13.

Shorter was also the main ingredient in the Wildcats advantage at the net, with the team collecting 13 blocks to Caldwell's five. Shorter finished with one solo and eight block assists. Biddle had the other solo block for the team, adding three block assists on the afternoon.

The Wildcats have a chance at redemption for their next match, as they welcome Holy Family to the WU Athletics Complex for a rematch on Friday. The Wildcats recently lost to the Tigers, 3-2, on Thursday in Philadelphia. Friday's match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
