Wilmington Advances to CACC Volleyball Semifinals With Sweep of Visiting Felician

NEWARK, Del. - - The Wilmington University volleyball team advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals for the third consecutive year, defeating the North Division's No. 4 seed, Felician, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the WU Athletics Complex.

Set scores for the match were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-15.

With the win, the Wildcats (23-9) heads to Lakewood, N.J. for the CACC Semifinal round on Friday, as they will square off against host and South Division's No. 3 seed Georgian Court after it defeated Nyack, 3-1, in the CACC Quarterfinals.

Felician's record tying season comes to a close, as the Golden Falcons tied a program record with six wins while reaching the CACC Tournament for the second time in their 10-year history. They finished with a 6-19 overall record.

The Wildcats got better as the match went on, hitting .136 in the first set before hitting .281 in the second set. They capped the match with 17 kills and a .286 attack percentage in the third and final set.

The South Division's No. 1 seed found themselves down early in the first set, trailing the visitors 11-5. The Wildcats battled back to close the gap to 15-12 before scoring six straight points to grab an 18-15 lead. Felician cut the lead to 22-21, but that was as close as it would get, as back-to-back errors gave the Wildcats set point, before another Golden Falcon hitting error put the Wildcats up, 1-0, with a 25-22 set victory.

Tied at 16-16 in the second set, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to take the lead for good in the game. On the serve of Alex Siolos, Kaitlin DiGiacinto, Annie Scarfo, and Brittany Biddle collected kills in the run. The teams traded points before Allison Briley tipped a ball past the block to give the Wildcats the 25-21 second set win, 25-21.

The third set was all Wilmington as it used runs of five, four, and seven straight points at three different points in the game to run away with it. Trailing 7-5 early in the game, Shelby Henderson served and Kate Shorter knocked down three straight kills to give the Wildcats a 9-7 lead. DiGiacinto added back-to-back kills to end the 4-0 run to put the Wildcats ahead 17-12 before Henderson served the Wildcats to seven straight points at the end. Hannah McQueen sent the Wildcats to the CACC Semifinals with a kill on match point, 25-15.

DiGiacinto led the team with 10 kills, adding her 10th double-double of the season with 12 digs. Shorter added nine kills with only one error on 13 attempts, hitting .615 for the match. Biddle chipped in with eight kills while adding three solo and two block assists on the match. Shorter also had three solo blocks, adding a block assist at the net as well.

Henderson led all back row players with 19 digs while Siolos paced the offense with 26 assists. The team hit .229 for the match.

Georgian Court advanced past the North Division's No. 2 seed with a 3-1 victory on the road, heading home to host the rest of the CACC Tournament.

Friday's match in Lakewood between the two South Division rivals is set to begin at 1 p.m. Admission for the CACC Tournament is $6 for adults and $3 for students and children.
