Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse Senior Rebekah McCurry Named CACC Student-Athlete of the Month

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Wilmington University women’s lacrosse standout Rebekah McCurry (St. Leonard, Md.) has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Student-Athlete of the Month for April 2015, as announced on Friday by Commissioner Dan Mara.

The student-athlete-of-the-month award is presented to an individual who demonstrates outstanding achievement athletically and academically, while also making a positive impact in the community by donating their time and efforts.

A senior midfielder, McCurry had a sensational month on the lacrosse for the Wildcats, as she helped guide the team to a trip to the CACC Championship Semifinals. WilmU punched its ticket to the league’s final four after knocking off Chestnut Hill College in the first round, 22-20 in overtime. McCurry proved to be a stabilizing force in the win, as she fired off eight shots – seven going on goal – and scored twice while assisting on four others for six points.

On the individual front, McCurry was named to the All-CACC First-Team in late-April, as she put up some spectacular numbers across a long line of statistical categories in 2015. She led Division II in caused turnovers (3.33 per game), while also ranking sixth in ground balls (4.22 per game). McCurry broke five single-season program records in 2015, including points (74 on 34 goals and 40 assists), assists (40), ground balls (76), draw controls (88) and caused turnovers (60). McCurry either broke or tied three single-game WilmU records, including draw controls (13 vs. Tampa) and ground balls (9 vs. Dominican), while twice tying the top mark for caused turnovers with seven (vs. Dominican & East Stroudsburg).

A two-time captain for the Wildcats, McCurry leaves WilmU as one of the program’s all-time greats. She was a two-time First-Team All-CACC performer, while ranking first in career ground balls (172) and caused turnovers (120), third in career goals (116), fourth in career assists (68) and third in career points (184).

McCurry also excels in the classroom, as she sports a 3.48 cumulative grade point average in her major of digital film making. She is a two-time Dean’s List honoree and has been recognized as a Wilmington Academic All-Star.

When she is not playing lacrosse or studying, McCurry has taken time out of her busy schedule to assist in a variety of community service activities. She took part in a pair of mission trips to Honduras in 2010 and 2011, while also volunteering at her church’s “Rainbow Land Week.” McCurry has also put her studies to good use in the community, as she volunteered to do filming and video editing at the Dragon Boat Race, which fights to end hunger in Chesapeake Beach, Md. She has also worked a variety of 5k runs with her teammates, as those events donate the funds to breast cancer research.

McCurry becomes the eighth individual overall and the first from Wilmington to earn a CACC Student-Athlete-of-the-Month honor during the 2014-15 season. The conference hands out the honor each month from September through May (9 in all) during the academic/athletic year. The CACC will announce its award winner for May in early June.
