BOWIE, Md. - - In its first games north of Clermont, Fla., the Wilmington University softball team had little problem heating up the bats as it swept a doubleheader from Bowie State, 13-2 and 22-0, in nonconference action at Lady Bulldogs Field on Thursday afternoon.

Wilmington evened its overall record at 11-11 with the doubleheader sweep and now head into Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a two-game winning streak and a mound of momentum. The Wildcats smashed 17 hits in game one and added 15 more in game two, scoring the most runs in a single game since tallying 42 and 26 in a doubleheader against Lincoln University on April 4, 2009.

Nine different hitters recorded a hit in the first game, led by freshman Brook Ash and seniors Christin Headley and Meghan Logullo who each collected three hits. Logullo went 3-for-3 while Ash and Headley each went 3-for-4. Ash finished with a game high three RBI's while also scoring a game high three runs. Headley added two RBI's and also scored a run.

The Wildcats were relentless in their attack, putting at least one run on the board in the each of the first four innings. After falling behind 2-1 with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first, the bats came alive to score four runs in the top of the second and tacked on seven runs in the third inning. The team added the 13th run in the top of the fourth to round out the scoring.

Ash produced what would become the game-winning RBI's in the second inning, hitting a two-run single to break a 2-2 tie. Headley followed with a triple into right center, making it 5-2 game early on.

Six different batters produced RBI hits in the seven run third inning, breaking the game wide open for starting pitcher Chelsea Botsch to close the door.

Botsch improved to 3-4 on the season by throwing all five innings, allowing six hits while striking out seven batters. Both of the runs she allowed were unearned.

Before even stepping onto the mound in the second game, Wildcat ace Katie Warrington was spotted a 15 run lead. The offense put 15 runs on the board on five hits in the inning, while being aided by 10 walks by the Bulldogs pitchers. Wilmington added a solo run in the second inning before posting four more in the third and another pair in the fourth before the game was called.

After walking the first batter in the bottom of the first inning, Warrington struck out the side in each of the three innings she appeared. The third strikeout in the second inning was not only her sixth of the game, but the 500th of her Wilmington career, becoming only the second player in program history to break the 500 barrier. She is now only five strikeouts away from breaking Kim Lawrence's program record of 508 set from 2007-10. Warrington has 503 from 2011-13.

Again nine batters recorded at least one hit in game two for the Wildcats, led by 3-for-4 performances from Headley and Rachel Painter. Headley knocked in three runs while scoring three runs, but it was Painter's six RBI's that led the team. Rice Fazio went 2-for-2 in game two while Jillian Stafford went 2-for-3 with four runs scored.

The competition will likely stiffen this weekend for the Wildcats' home opener they host CACC rival Caldwell on Saturday for a doubleheader. Wilmington was selected to finished third in the CACC Preseason Poll, but trailed Caldwell who was voted second. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Asbury Field.
