CLERMONT, Fla. - - The Wilmington University softball team dropped a pair of early games on Friday at the National Training Center, first losing to Wayne State (Neb.), 9-0, before falling to Gannon, 2-0, in the team's second to last day of its Florida Trip.

The Wildcats fall to 8-10 overall with the pair of losses on Friday and round out their annual Spring Break trip on Saturday with a double dip against Mercy College. The bats were silenced on Friday as Wayne State pitcher Sara Scheffert tossed a five-inning complete game one-hitter in game one and the team could only manage three hits against Gannon in game two.

The Wayne State Wildcats (7-2) jumped out early on Wilmington, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first before adding a single run in the third. The game was called in the fifth inning after Wayne State scored its fourth run of the inning, bringing the mercy rule into effect.

Freshman Cambria Ziemba registered the lone hit for the Wildcats, singling back up the middle with two outs in the third inning, effectively breaking up the no-hitter and perfect game Scheffert would have thrown.

Stafford was tagged with the loss in the circle, throwing all four innings while giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. The senior struck out three batters on the afternoon. Stafford is now 2-2 from inside the circle on the season.

Danielle Griffin got the start in the circle for game two, going the distance with the only blemish coming in the top of the third as visitors tallied two runs on two hits, which proved to be the game-winners.

The Wildcats' best chance to get on the board came in the second inning as they put a pair of runners on base with only one out. Christin Headley started the rally by reaching base on a hit by pitch before Skye Boris singled through the hole in the left side. But Gannon's starter Erica Batholow was able to get the next two batters out, stranding Headley and Boris at second and third to end the threat.

Ziemba singled back up the middle to lead off the third and moved to second on a wild pitch, but Batholow again pitched her way out of trouble to leave the inning unscathed. Brook Ash rounded out the Wildcat hits by beating out a single to first base in the sixth.

Griffin struck out three batters while only giving up five hits, but fell to 0-3 on the season with the loss.

The Wildcats' two week trip to Clermont comes to a close on Saturday against Mercy. The first pitch of game one is scheduled to be thrown at 9 a.m. Game two will immediately follow.
